Lab Consultant != Construction Engineer

I think I might have just gotten the dumbest user request ever here in the labs.

User: There's a really annoying hum coming from the wall.
Me: That's the ventillation system.
User: Can you fix it?
Me: Uh, no.
User: Why did you put an annoying ventillation system right next to the lab?
Me: I don't know.
User: It's a really bad place to have it.
Me (by now more than a little annoyed): I didn't design the building. I didn't pick the place for the lab. The building was donated to the University.
User: You should really fix that humming though.

I wonder if he thought that my Excel skills somehow qualified me for commercial-grade HVAC retrofitting.

Haha. As if you're responsible for the very contruction of the building. You should have answered, "Because we needed the building's basement space for the torture room."
