LA/SoCal: "Best of" -- make your submission!

db

Lifer
Was hoping to get some favorites or "best-of"s for the SoCal area, ie
best place for fine arts, best place to see up-and-coming musical talent, etc etc etc

Please give yours--the field is wide open as long as it's an exceptional place to enjoy/experience 🙂

Thanks for your input!

best place for chili: chili my soul.. mmmmm

best fried chicken: roscoe's chicken and waffles

best novelty hot dog: pink's hot dog

Best Deli: Langer's Deli (7th & Alverado)
To be more specific, also the best pastrami, and probably the best corned beef. Try the classic reuben or the pastrami and coleslaw on rye.

Best museum: The Getty. Great view, fantastic collection of really tacky late 1700s French rococco and neoclassical art/furnishings, and it's free. And the snack bar serves outstanding bratwursts.

Yes the Getty is a must. I'm also going to recommend the Norton Simon museum in Pasadena. It's much much smaller but they have a very interesting collection and it is free for students.

There's also the Huntington, which IMO sucks for art because 1700-1800's English portraiture is about as boring as you can get, but the gardens kick ass.

Compton is a nice place for the sights.
bah! give me echo park or whittier! 😀
WTF??? You think Whittier is ghetto? I mean it has it's less than classy parts, but it is nowhere near ghetto. I think most of LA is pretty tame for that matter (compared to some other cities).

some parts of whittier. it does have its good parts, but when i worked for a appraisal company and had to go into whittier, there were neighborhoods where i had to 'click, click' my door locks. it isnt that bad though. in fact, id compare it to certain parts of downtown/chula vista in san diego.

Uh. Its cloudy at the beach. Just a word of warning.
thanks for the heads up. just saved me some gas money (ill save that complaint for the 'worst of' thread)

Downtown LA is pretty tame in all actuality. I wouldn't want to be there though after dinner or past working hours.

Yeah, its probably mid 60's with a cool breeze. I'm about 2 miles east of Venice Beach.

El tepayec for awesome burritos. I think Manuels is still there.

Arclite is a decent theatre, their projection standards aren't up to snuff though. The academy theatre on wilshire is only a single screen but its very good and they have great projection. The bridge is also very nice but 14$ a ticket no thanks (even with the reclining leather seats it's still not worth it.)

Best cheeseburger (debatable): The Counter in Santa Monica Edit: Mrdingledangle has a good point in Father's Office. Damn what a decision.
Best french dipped sandwiches: Phillipes
Best venue: Henry Fonda Theatre
Best record store: Amoeba
Best Pizza: A small pizza joint in venice on abbot-kinney blvd (I think it's Joe's?)
Best places to spend a day: Venice (beach), Shoreline village in long beach, Santa monica (3rd street)
Best hiking: Several trails on the palos verdes peninsula

Downtown is actually picking up with the disney hall and stuff but it's still pretty bland.
