http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/21/us/los-angeles-student-lewd-abuse-settlement/

A teacher for 30 years, Berndt is now serving a 25-year prison sentence for putting pupils in bondage, and then photographing them with semen-filled spoons held at their mouths and 3-inch cockroaches crawling across their faces

I wonder how long this was going on. This guy was a teacher for 30 years!

Nobody noticed that this freak was doing these things to his young students? Crazy.

Yup. That's the great LA Pedified School District for ya.

Saddest thing is, this turd is probably only being punished because the publicity was so massive, otherwise it'd be covered up like it was for so many years.

And yes, there's a culture of craziness that's tolerated in LA schools that still continues. The teachers unions protect the shit out of their own be they good teachers, shitty teachers or absolute monsters. To get a teacher fired... they pretty much would have to have committed some unspeakable act and even then it's not easy.

People knew what this shitbag was up to during many of those thirty years. The culture of corruption protected him... and continues to protect others.

Were they raped? Seems like a lot of money if there was no penetration.

I don't know if he raped any of his students. The things he did were still awful and I think the money is justified.

That's more than $1M per victim. That's wrongful death settlement kind of money. If there was no rape, I think it's excessive burden on taxpayers.

Yet another reason against unions. They protect abusive teachers and make it impossible for them to get fired.

The settlement was big because administrators ignored and even dismissed what he was doing to his children. Read the article. There is decades of abuse. IMO, the administrators should have been put in jail for failing to protect the children. Maybe other school districts will look at the large settlement and take action. It serves as a deterrent, and the money is warranted.

Just like CEO's were protected by the Dems/Reps in bed with Wallstreet, horrible teachers in CA are protected by the CTA, LAUSD, and Dem politicians who were bought by top dollar union 'involuntary donations'

As Mai said, the huge settlement is justification as not a single school admin or union hack is going to spend a single minute in jail for protecting the perverts just like the catholic church previously did. The only way to stop this is to use the huge settlement as a deterrent. It does abhor me that the taxpayers are on the hook, but then again LA county votes in Dems that are CTA friendly 9/10 times so they reap what they sow.

You know what is worst, this turd still gets his pension. The union defended him.

It is because the union kept blocking them. They couldn't even fire him. They had to pay him to leave and are stilling paying him for life.

He's likely in jail the rest of his life. So... the pension goes to support his family? That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Judge should reject the settlement as excessive. I don't think it's fair to other kids in LAUSD to drain the district budget this way.
If there was no actual rape, it should be $100k per student maximum

Why and how is that going to happen? The LAUSD settled this one. I guarantee you they didn't want this crap going to a full on trial to hide all the names of the administrative idiots who covered this crap up.

What makes me laugh is the stupid Dem controlled California assembly let a bill die that would've made any future teacher like this much easier to fire. Guess what, the evil CTA lobbied all hell out to kill it.

What would've been poetic justice is if the settlement came out of the CTA's ass instead of the LAUSD which takes money way from the school kids.

No his sentence is 25 year, and may get out early with good behavior.

He's getting out in 12.5 or less if he plays his cards right. That way he'll be able to collect his fat ass pension that will have accrued quite a bit of interest as the taxpayers in CA are currently paying his living expenses.
