All BS. You can have smoking here at your bar or restaurant, but not if you have employees. The solution: multiple owners-then the bar can have smoking.
Why would you want to put up a Christmas tree at city hall? That's govt property. Last time I checked you are allowed to put up as many and as big christmas trees as you'd like-on your own damm property.
Cooking in trans fats is fine-unless you are trying to sell it in California. Crisco is still available at the grocery store. Get fryin'.
No sodas sold at school? Bring your own. AFAIK there is nothing prohibiting a student from bringing their own non-alcoholic beverage to school.
Gambling on the internet? I think it's illegal in the US, but I don't think it is enforced on individuals. If you can find a way to pay them, you can still do it. My buddy is still gambling online.
Prescription drugs? I think you can still order from online pharmacies outside the US.

Funny you didn't mention the real rights violations, like the govt reading emails and tapping your phone, checking your library records, warantless searches, etc..all legal under the patriot act and related laws.

Just to add to what Vic said, we as human beings perceive and define "value" individually. "Need" is very small part of that incomprehensible equation.
