Sorry of this question is trite, but I'm quite torn between the two.

L90D+ for $338 right now
VP171B2 for $305

L90D+ is 19" and VP171B2 is 17"
Both run at 1280x1024
Both are rated at 8ms
Both look like 8-bit panels

Here are my requirements:
Gaming. I don't game as much as I used to, but I still play FPS and other games. I'd like to not have any noticable ghosting.
High screen quality.

Does one actually have poor gaming performance. If they're similar, which one has the better screen quality? I'm not too concerned about the size difference since the resolution is the same. The price difference is not really large (10%) so really the quality is what I'm most concerned about.

What do you all think? Which should I buy or Is there a monitor better for my needs at a similar price?

I also love my L90D+, infact I just bought the L91D as a dual monitor for watching movies/tv. It's supposedly better at those then the L90D+, except the L90D+ is fantastic for games while the L91D is not.

You won't notice any ghosting or any problems with the L90D+ and I play BF2 a lot!!

And althought you mentioned the size doesn't matter, there is a huge difference when you sit down to a 19" LCD then a 17". You will want the 19", no question.

According to this site, the VP171b-2 and L90D+ use these panels:

VP171b-2: http://www.auo.com/auoDEV/products.php?func=info&product_id=3&items_id=1
L90D+: http://www.samsung.com/Products/TFTLCD/...ors_n_Industrial/LTM190EX/LTM190EX.htm

It sounds on-par to me (my conjecture was correct).
Both are 6-bit panels.

You were the one who said you were near-sighted (you can see near) right? Well the 17" is probably the best then because of the smaller dot pitch. That way the image will be finer. The only reason to get the 19" in my eyes (no pun intended) is if you had issues seeing up close or want the text big for some reason.

Hmm... the only sites I've found that quote the amount of colors say 16.7 for the viewsonnic them. That first site you listed might not be correct. The rep at the reseller said it was the newest shipment from viewsonic, but only verified that it was 8ms and not the panel.

I've seen both on the L90D+, so I don't know. I'll see i the cheapest reseller knows anything about that one.

I was mostly kidding about being nearsighted. I wear glasses that give me better than 20/20 so it doesn't really matter. If one of the panels is 8 bit and the other isn't, then that will make the choice easy, though.

16.7 m. doesn't necessarily mean 8-bit. 6-bit panels can really only show 262K but they simulate up to 16.2 m. colors. Some manufacturers even inflate that value to 16.7m. Half of the sites I see say 16.2 and the other half say 16.7 for the L90D+.

Let's say I'm 90% sure both of those LCDs are 6-bit. Searching them with "overdrive" doesn't show up any relevant results. That's the only way you're going to get that low on a PVA panel, and a PVA panel is the only way you're getting 8-bit in most cases.

Can't say anything about the L90D+, but i can tell you that i have a VP171B that i got a year ago and i love it for gaming. I have yet to notice any ghosting on it, and colors look great on it IMO. I play a lot of games like HL2, CS:S and Doom 3, and it works great for those.

6-bit+FRC isn't bad at all these days. I use a 6-bit. What's mainly limiting the LCD's color range is its current CCFL backlight and 8-bit gamma adjustment, I believe. Take a look at my other thread on LED backlights. Maybe you'll want to wait and see if they come out with any LED backlight LCDs that are affordable in the future? Maybe you want to save your money and wait for SED/OLED? SED/OLED is quite a ways away but LED backlight-LCDs are already for sale.

While I'm quite certain the LCDs you chose were 6-bit, there are 8-bit/overdrive PVA LCDs. I haven't seen any 17" ones yet though, only 19".

L90+ owner here. I <3 every bit of it.

Very minimal if none ghosting! I play counterstrike: source and Q3A no a regular basis and I don't notice any difference compared to my older CRT.

Runs absolutely smoothly, no trails or ghosting, and the hardware as thin and sleek as hell.

No dead pixels either. :)

It looks like both are great in the gaming aspect. How about the general screen and color quality? Have you been able to compare it to anything else?

Thanks. I guess my problem is no one really groups the 17" and 19" monitors together for comparison.

Also,
"Unfortunately, this monitor's video qualities leave a lot to be desired, so you'll just have to find a good TV set for watching your DVDs. "
