L5 hemivertebrae, severe sacrum misalignment and misaligned hips.

Got out of the truck Thursday, felt a little twinge. By midnight, Holy Crap!! Had to crawl to the bathroom because I couldn't stand up. Had my first chiropractic visit Friday and will 3 days per week for the next several weeks.

Show me the meds. Going to my G.P. this afternoon hoping for some muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatorys.

That doesn't sound so good. How the hell did that happen?
Congenital with the hemivertebrae. Knew about it since 1990 when I had a sciatic nerve problem. Been fine since with stretching, crunches and being careful. Dr. thinks I've had a recent injury because there's very little arthritis on the L5 and/or the bad vertebrae had a hand in the sacrum misalignment. Nothing comes to mind as far as injuring it.

Anyway, better living through pharmaceuticals, I hope.

Using a chiropractor is great, especially if they can give you strengthening exercises. Use the chiropractor to his/her fullest, but if they don't give you exercises to prevent this from happening again, try to find a good physical therapist. The chiropractor can get you back to where you were, the PT can get you strong so as to prevent this sort of thing 🙂 Or, if the chiro is good, they can give you exercises as well. Hope you can find some relief through treatment.

pretty much what i was gonna say.

tough break on the hemivertebra (hemivertebrae suggest you have more than one hemivertebtra). if chiropractic care + therapeutic exercises don't do you any good, then it's time to explore surgery. typically, it would result in an excision of the hemi and fusion. it's definitely something you'd have to research for yourself and get various second opinions. it's kind of an individual basis kinda deal.

i personally can't tell you which outcome would be better in the long-run, surgical fusion of the segments or non-surgical treatment through chiropractic care and pt. in both cases, you will be in an increased rate of degeneration because of faulty biomechanics and alignment. it's a tough call.

Thanks S.C. & eits. Once again, you freely give professional help/advice.

Only the L5 is malformed. Other than the sciatic nerve problem in 1990, I haven't had this before (46) so I'm very hopeful pt should help after getting back in line after the chiropractor. After the fact, there were some warning signs over the last couple of months that I attributed to muscle stress. Thursday, before the pain, I had just done 40 min on the elliptical. How quickly things change.

Thanks

Something "moved" in the back when I was doing crunches on Saturday. Same pain so I assume the same problem. Been doing the stretching/strengthening daily since November and have been reasonably pain free. Was supposed to go to the Gulf fishing/snorkeling with the fam on Wednesday. The boy was so looking forward to it.:'(

Maybe my chiro can do a miracle between now and then. The meds aren't cutting it this time either.

Crap.

High dose fish oil, high dose D3, start a strict anti-inflammatory diet, see your chiropractor twice per day until your trip. Make sure to ice it.

Been on 6 to 8/day for a long time. Didn't know about the D3 but I've got a bottle at the house so I'll get on that this a.m. after the chiro. Been icing. I don't think this time is as bad as the last but I'm still out of commission for much more that the t.v. remote. When I get mobile again, going to try a new PT recommended by my Bro.

S.C., I might could the fish oil through my HSA but I've already been paying for it out of pocket. This is what I use.

Thanks. Both of you are assets to AT.

Edit: Nix that on the HSA without a prescription.
