Left 4 Dead 2's, The Passing, finally arrives today on the PC and the Xbox 360 from Valve. PC owners get the DLC for free while Xbox 360 owners will have to pay 560 MS Points ($7) to find out what happens when the cast from the original Left 4 Dead cross paths with the cast of Left 4 Dead 2.

The Passing brings new co-op challenge mode and new multiplayer and single-player levels to play along with a host of new weapons to try. There's also a new weekly feature called "Mutations" where Valve will throw a twist in the game every week.

Mutations aren't a new monster, but a new game mode variant what will launched as weekly events and become available in the game for one week. Each week, one new Mutation is featured and the previous Mutation retired. And once a month, players can vote on their favorite mutation, and the winner of the Poll will be brought back the following week.

Every Thursday, the L4D2 Blog will notifiy you of the upcoming mutation. When a new mutation launches, the old one will be retired. Two game modes described by Valve are "Realism Versus" and "Chainsaw Massacre", both described below:

  • Realism Versus: All "Realism" changes are in place and working against the Survivors. (For example, items won't glow, the zombies are tougher, the witches will be able to instantly kill you, etc.). This makes the Jockey one of the most powerful Specials because of his ability to steer a Survivor out of view. (Valve recommends making sure your Microphone is working so you can yell for help.)
This Mutation is only available in Versus.

  • Chainsaw Massacre: You are armed with the only thing you need to survive a Zombie Apocalypse: a chainsaw with unlimited gas. Shred thousands of zombies on your way to safety. This Mutation will be available later, and only in Campaign Mode.
To learn about the other Mutations, check the in-game L4D2 blog each week. Currently, Valve can only confirm that Mutations will cover different game modes and be available across all Campaigns. You can also give feedback on individual Mutations and Mutations in general in Left 4 Dead 2 forums.

Got it about 9:00 this morning,.. and played it all day long. Love the new map, and fun to see the original L4D players back in the game (aside from the dead one,.. which I'm assuming they can't get to do any more voice work, which is why the same character had no new dialouge when crash coarse came out)

So if your on the fence,.. do it! Its a blast!!
