The game was released with the following:
- 4 player models that differ only aesthetically
- 4 zombies that were different from one another
- 4 maps, of which you could only plays Versus on 2
- A small selection of weapons
What has been patched into it? One new game type and Versus on the other two maps. Color me not exactly impressed. It was widely circulated, and AFAIK never denied, that L4D would receive similiar support post-release as TF2 because there was a concern upon release with the small amount of maps in a MP only game. Clearly that was not the case and I'm not sure if that's a case of high expectactions or Valve not following through on their word.
edit: In fact, the Wiki page for L4D states (and is sourced) that L4D would have DLC similar to TF2 including new enemies, etc. They have stated more will come despite L4D2's pending release so we'll see.
I'm not so vehement that I'll boycott the next in the series. Valve will need to persuade me a lot to fork over another $40 for the next game in the series released just a year after the previous.
