The clinical data seems mixed, and I was just wondering if anyone has found that taking it has improved their mood or motivation.

My grocery list now contains:

60 Capsules/500mg L-Phenylalanine
4 oz L-Tyrosine Powder
30 Tablets/200mg SAMe
30 Capsules/50 mg 5-HTP
30 grams Phenibut Powder

I'll post back in a couple weeks and let everyone know if any of them have magically transformed me from an apathetic slob who hates his life and his job into whatever the opposite of that is 😀

I've tried several prescription medications that didn't, so I think if it does, I can rule out placebo effect.

The L-tyrosine is because my mother went to some lecture where a psychologist/nutritionist (with credentials) swore by it, and she want her boy to be happy 😛 Since it's mother's day, I told her I would try it even though I didn't expect it to work.

From what I have read, it looks like it might have an effect on energy/motivation, but not depression. The rest is impulse buying .. except for the phenibut .. I've been looking for an excuse to try that for awhile 😀
 
Exercise would be the logical solution, but I am either too apathetic or schizophrenic to actually do it. I sleep long and hard, but have trouble going to bed. No trouble falling asleep usually - I just can't make myself get up and go to bed.

Edit: I'm not really hoping these supplements will change my life (which I allow needs changing) - I am looking for something that will put me in a frame of mind where I am able to see the changes that need to be made and actually change them. If that makes sense.
 
Starting with going to do laundry because I am sitting around in an old pair of gym shorts because I am out of clean underwear. 😱

Why both l-phenylalanine and l-tyrosine? I could understand racemic or dl-phenylalanine because of its pharmaceutical effects beyond serving as a catecholamine precursor, but both are large neutral amino acids that will compete for passage across the blood-brain barrier (whereupon the l-phenylalanine will be converted to l-tyrosine and thence to l-dopa). It's probably worth trying them individually (on an empty stomach, natch) to see which one works better for you, since the l-phenylalanine can be converted to phenylethylamine, whereas the l-tyrosine won't be.

But if they do exert any effects on you, taking them together may not increase the effect over taking just one of them.

How about adding choline? That's cheap and some people have spoken highly of its benefits.
 
Short-term affects are much easier to come by with these supplements than something that will continue to provide a significant benefit over the long run, such as after a couple months etc. That said, out of the ones mentioned here, I've found lecithin (choline) supplements to be the most beneficial for mental energy and clarity, and l-phenylalanine (and tyrosine? some sort of combo, can't remember) second on the list.

Because I have no idea what I am doing and they were cheap, so I just stuck them both in the cart and worry about the details later when someone who is knowledgable on matter responds to my post 😱

If I see any perceived benefit from these, I'll order up some choline next time around.

I've been taking L-tyrosine (small doses) for about two weeks now. My mood has improved some, but that could be just circumstanes as I've gotten some good news lately. So, I can't say if it has been helping all that much or just the placebo effect. Probably won't hurt. 😉
