MINEOLA, N.Y. -- A real estate attorney was being arraigned Thursday on charges he had explicit sexual conversations with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl, but turned out to be an undercover investigator, a prosecutor said.
Jan Kabas, 53, of Jericho, was facing two counts of attempted dissemination of indecent material to minors, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon said in a statement.
Kabas was awaiting arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead.
Kabas is accused of visiting online chat rooms, where he encountered what he thought was a 13-year-old girl, but who actually was an undercover investigator from the Long Island Chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He allegedly engaged in numerous sexually explicit conversations during July and August.
The attorney also allegedly sent a photograph of himself, inquired about her sexual experiences, requested a picture of the "girl," and spoke about sexual acts he wanted to perform with her, Dillon said.
Kabas was arrested Wednesday after allegedly setting up a meeting with the "girl" at an undisclosed location.
