I posted a thread resembling this one (albeit much longer) in the help forum. Thinking I have refined the problem, I repost it here :

My computer hangs after a random while while playing 3dgames. Sometimes not for many hours, but when the problem starts, it comes back often (after 5 - 10 mins, usually ) , until it goes away for a while again (mostly after I have had the comp shut down for a couple of hours) .
Just before it hangs, I get screen glitches, and when it hangs, the sound hangs too, and eventually the monitor becomes black and my hd powers down(no clue why, perhaps it's the OS emergency shutting-down; (isn't supposed to do that though)).
It seems more liable to hang when there's lots happening on the screen.
I would think it a heat problem, but for the fact that I can't test Direct3d with the 'Test Direct3D' button in dxdiag ; all I get is the blue screen of XP failure blamed on pmx2hal.dll ; one of my Kyro2 driver-files.

So has anyone encountered something like this before? Does'nt XP pro like Kyro2?

Before anyone says so ; I've switched drivers, unplugged PCI-cards, underclocked my Kyro2, changed refreshrate, checked for conflicts, fiddled in BIOS ; all to no avail.

Helphelp!

Yeah, until a few mins ago. Have tried others though..
This is just too weird. Now I uninstalled the driver you mentioned in the device manager, then I removed all kyro things with add/remove programs. WIth powervr tools it said I didn't have enough access, heh, but it disappeared anyway.
After this I restarted my comp and tried to install the newest Herc-drivers..in the middle of installation, it said 'Prophet 4500 not installed. Remove any old installationfiles and try again' or something similiar. When I tried to restart this time my comp hanged. When I got into windows again though, I let windows find and install new drivers..I think it searches on you hd for them, perhaps? Anyhow, it installed a herc driver from december last year, and now I can 'Test Direct3D' wothout problems (yet) .
It remains to be seen if I can play games without random lockups and freezes..(I'd have to ignore 10 years of experience with computers to believe that, but anyhow ;)

First, you just uninstalled the drivers in a very Kyro-unfriendly way. It likes you to run the actual unistaller it comes with first. No device manager tricks should ever apply. Try that, then look for the driver files and manually delete them,(if they aren't already), and that should uninstall the card totally. Then just reboot and manually install the newest drivers for it. (Skip the New Hardware prompt, and run the executable.) That's what always works for me. I'm about to, (hopefully), have to do a much more difficult uninstall of my Voodoo4 and stick a Kyro 2 in with it. Wish me luck.

Edit: First sentence didn't make sense. What I get for not proofreading.

Do you have the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for your system?

If you don't, get them. Don't underestimate what a difference they can make.

Good...I'm not the only one having those problems ;)
That was the same thing that was happening to me before I installed the latest drivers......but to fix it, I had to disconnect the VGA adapter and leave it disconnected for 2 minutes then plug it back in. But the problem kept on happening repeatedly so I installed the 14.0028 drivers.

ANyhow :) I have the latest BIOS version, I have tried uninstalling both with uninstaller and add/remove programs before.
For now though, all thee skips and jumps mentioned above seems to have led to an absence of bsod's and hangings.
The 14.28 pwvr(ref) drivers won't work for me ,but luckily these old hercules ones seem to. I will try to install´the newest drivers when new ones come out, 'cause if you get it to work thru hops and hoops, so to speak, (and you don't know exactly what made the whole thing work), it's hard to reproduce if you get problems again or decide to reformat or somehing.

I thank you for the pieces of advice though, that I do
