Kyro II - looking to the future...

I had been considering getting a REALLY cheap GeForce2 MX to replace my aging Voodoo 3 until I read this article: http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/kyro2/default.asp

Now I'm not sure whether I want a GeForce2 MX or the Prophet 4500 - both which I can get from Komplett.co.uk for a really good price (I live in the UK). The MX is £60 and the Kyro II is £90. The reason I was swayed is because I want to use FSAA (much faster on the Kyro II then the MX) and also because of the Kyro's increased performance in Unreal engine games. However, I am concerned by the closing article, which states that the Kyro II might not perform as well in DX8 games.

Does anyone know if the Kyro II will perform OK in DX8 games (at least at the MX level) or should I stick to my original plan and get a MX?

Thanks... BTW I only have a PIII 500 /w 256MB RAM

I would rather get the kryo II, I'm pretty sure it does as well if not better than the geforce 2 MX at DX8 games. It's a much better card overall, and I cant see a reason why you would choose to get the Geforce2 mx over it.

I've used them both, herc MX and the Herc 4500. Theres no doubt that the kyro II beats the MX in every test I ran. A really nice card for the money.

You have a low (ish) cpu, the kyro only comes into its own with 800mhz processors. Personally I would consider the kyro only if you will upgrade the cpu sometime soon. The other choice is the GTS which can be found for around 110 in the UK (look at pricewatch) and will perform better with your cpu.

Woah, woah woah. I'm pretty sure the kryo II beats the geforce 2 gts in a lot of tests also. I think the kryo II will do good with the P3 500, but maybe you want to upgrade the p3 eventually. He also said that he's looking towards the future, in the long term I'm pretty sure the kryo II has the geforce II gts beat.

The Kyro II performance is ecxactly where it should be for the price!🙂 Search the threads.......many here on A/T, including myself, have B/M'ed our own Kyro II's and found them to beat the Radeon and MX but not the GF2 GTS, Pro, or Ultra overall!🙂 They (Kyro II) are nice cards and with better drivers may eventually come out on top of a GTS......but with current drivers seem to fall short.🙁

ToBeMe, that's interesting considering every review I have read has the Kyro2 coming out on top of the GF2GTS, GF2GTS Pro in most tests, and the radeon....

Oh Goodie!😉 Have YOU tested and compared them yourself?????😉 I have, so have many others!😉 Advertised B/M's done by many sites are many times geared toward the particular Hardware being tested/Benchmarked..........real world B/M's are often different!🙂

Why is it so hard to believe that the card performs......exactly where it should for the money you pay for it????😉 I've never once said it's a "bad card"........I was excited about what it might do, bought one as soon as I could get one, and ran the B/M's on it hoping to find they were the same as some sites advertised........they were CLOSE......but fell short in some areas.🙁 I'm sure they will do better as drivers mature and will eventually do in "real world" B/M's what they did on some sites!🙂 What's wrong with that??????😉 Every new card goes through a maturing process........why wouldn't Kyro II???

I also recall the GF DDR & GF2 GTS didn't acheive what many sites said they would initialy......but with time, they did! I trust the Kyro II will also!🙂
