Kubuntu install question

I have two drives in my system. XP x64 is installed on the boot drive; the second drive has a directory where I install a lot of my XP software. I'd like to install Kubuntu on this second drive, but I'm not sure what option to use in the Kubuntu install partition menu. I want to keep the drive intact and not format the partition.

I haven't installed Kubuntu before; what option should I choose? Maybe I'm a n00b, but it doesn't seem very straight forward to me. I'm afraid of formatting/overwriting what's already there!

If your 2nd disc is completely partitioned (meaning current partitiion is taking up all the space on the drive) You will need to resize/repartition the 2nd drive.

If you use The Knoppix Live CD, and Run QTParted this very easy to do, then just run the Kubuntu Install and tell it to use all the free space you made

If however you only partitioned part of your 2nd drive to begin with Just make sure the Install knows to only use the Free space

The second disk just has one partition on it. I suppose I could partition it into two. Would the Kubuntu install be able to do this for me?

You need free space on the drive to install Linux.

The Install Can repartition the 2nd drive BUT not with out losing the data curently on it.

You'll need to either back up that stuff and recopy it to the new partion or use QTParted or similar program to Resize the partition.

I've used QTParted quite successfully myself and Have only been messing with Ubuntu/Kubuntu for a couple weeks

during an ubuntu install it asks if you want to install the OS to free space on the hard disk. Im not sure if Kubuntu has this option but it might be what you need. I dont think itll erase the existing data on the drive.
