kt7a & usb(HP's) scanner not working together

Whenever I try to start to scan, the computer freezes up, the mouse moves but everthing else has no response. When I insert the HP scanning disc I get the message that it was unable to turn on the usb ports and I needed to check the bios. How can this be when my keyboard and mouse are usb and work fine. I've reloaded the usb filter drivers numerous times, no change. I've checked my bios and nothing seems out of the ordinary, and I downloaded and installed the via's 4.33 driver. I've installed the scanner on two other computers and it works fine. If someone has any ideas on this let me know!!!!!
