KT7A-RAID up and running!

AMD4ME2

Athlon 900@1050 right now.. got it to post at 1100 but got the dreaded registry error from windows. Haven't played with the voltages at all.. its one sweet machine! will continue to tweek... so far I haven't had any install problems.. 🙂

I am glad to see that most people getting the KT7A RAID have been happy with it. I took a couple of 900 T-Birds to 1100 on mine at 1.85V. I have had mine running perfectly for over a week now. Good luck, and have fun tweaking 🙂

I just traded my Aopen AK73Pro for an Abit KT7-raid & i like it much better.

The Via ata100 is too unstable for now on the AK73pro.

EDIT: i got the KT7 not "A" , but i still like it. 🙂

I just got mines yesterday, it's a nice board. None of those crazy problems like the KT7 had. It's really stable and all.

I've had mine running for over a week now, with ZERO problems. Stable as the proverbial rock. Currently I have a 1GHz Tbird clocked at 145 X 8 (1160 Mhz) at stock voltages! The 145MHz FSB (290 MHz DDR) really gets the memory subsystem moving- my Sandra 2001 memory benchmarks are both well over 600. I would highly recommend this board to anyone who really wants to push their system to its limits, and still maintain some semblence of stability.

does the CPU FSB plus feature overclock the PCI/AGP bus at all? for example if I choose 133/33 and then 12 for the CPU FSB Plus value. does my PCI bus speed and AGP bus speed go up? Sandra was saying that my agp was at 94mhz and my pci was at 44 but I never noticed any stability problems at all. I had also heard that there was a bug with the divisor calculation in Sandra, any ideas?

Just got my KT7A with a 1GHz Tbird up and runnning too. I've tried just about everything and the best I can get is 9x137=1234. I'll be trying for more with more tweaking.

BTW should I install the VIA 4 in 1 drivers?

I would install the latest 4.28 beta 4-in-1 drivers to optimize your configuration. I have these installed, and I have had no problems as a result. I know that there are others in this forum that would disagree with me, but that is my personal experience. As for what the AGP/PCI bus speeds do when you use the separate cpu speed adjustment vairable in the BIOS, I don't know, and I can't immediately find it. I try to stick with the really wide range of FSB/PCI combinations that ABIT has programmed in already. That way, I KNOW wha the various bus speeds are. If anyone has any insight, please post.

Also, what core voltage are you using to get over 1.2GHZ and what week is your CPU?

Skiracer my cpu is a week 1 2001 and 1.80 Vcore. I am running at 1.85 now to see how high I can get it. I did install the 4.28 4 in 1 drivers and saw no differance in benchmaking. I could run this cpu @ 1.2GHz(12x100)@ 1.75 Vcore, but I wanted a higher FSB. I think this thing could go higher, but something in my system doesn't like the higher bus speeds. I need to play around some more cause I am unfamiliar with the settings on this KT7A-R board. It's defiantly not like a BX board. My memory scores absolutely suck.

Got mine up and running today. Bought a cheapo Duron 700, but it works just fine at 7*133 @ 1.65V. I like the raid! (2 x 75GXPs). I'm just waiting for the 1.2Ghz T-birds to get cheaper (summer time) or cooler, or both..

It's stable as a rock so far, and noticeaby faster than my previous machine. (PIII 600@800). mostly from the raid, partly from the processor.

I had a hell of a time loading WIN2K, though, until I disconnected the IDE Zip drive. It kept confusing the OS loaders (DOS, NT, Win2K). they couldn't find the raid array... what a pain. I called Abit and let them know, they are just a few miles from me...

Since all of you are succesful, could you please try to answer my question ? (ATA100 as bootdevice thread)

I cannot get my ATA100 to be my bootdevice. It works fine as a secondary harddrive (have an other HDD on the IDE1) but I want to boot from it...

Reaper: I'm glad you got your system up to over 1.2GHz. My week 49 2000 CPU isn't stable at anything over 1160 MHz and 1.75 core voltage. However, at 8 * 145, my sandra 2001 memory scores were awesome: ALU = 614, FPU= 658! The only thing that beats that is a 1.5 GHz P4 with RIMMs (Rambus S**KS!). You may be having trouble with your RAM- do you have good PC 133 RAM? Are your memory timings appropriate for your RAM (CAS setting is critical)? Also, make sure that when you try to go to a higher FSB speed that you don't select one with a PCI bus that is too fast. I would try the 133/33 setting first- that way the only thing that is overclocked is your CPU (be sure to lower the multiplier!) and your RAM. GOOD LUCK.

Nafur: Have you selected the boot drive in the HPT BIOS? It is one of the menu selections, and you MUST select the correct drive as the boot drive. Also, in the KT7A BIOS, be sure to select ATA100 as the boot device in all THREE locations, not just the first one. Also, if you haven't upgraded to the WZ version BIOS, I would recommend it. Have fun!

Just tweaked a little more, ran out of memory bandwidth (I think) at 145Mhz. I settled at 960. There are many interesting clock frequency selections in that bios.

I reattached the IDE ZIP and it works fine now, just a problem during OS install...

I like my board too..
It has been running about a week, just unlocked it today and it is zooming..
I can still go faster, just thoght it was enough for the first time 🙂

Skiracer I have 128MB of PC133 Infineon 2-2-2. The best I've got so far is for memory- ALU=582, FPU=632, and for the cpu- ALU=3458, FPU=1699. Enabling the 4-way interleave helped out alot. I've got everything offered in bios set to the best performance. Only thing I haven't done is do a fresh install of WinME. I'll do that when I'm finished with all the tweaking. Oh one more thing, I do think the ram is alittle flaky. I probably going to order some new ram from the compuwiz deal.

REAPER: Those benchmarks aren't too bad (da*n fast in my book!) My CPU marks are ALU= 3266 and FPU= 1596. One thing I like is my HDD benchmark (RAID-0) = 36584 not bad!

What CPU/case temps are you getting at 1.85Vdc core? So far I haven't tried pushing the voltages yet- I want to see what this puppy will do without stressing it too much.

I don't know about the RAM deal at Compuwiz, but I have two sticks of 128MB Kingmax Tiny BGA PC150 and they are FLAWLESS. I have had them up to as high as 163MHz CAS2 without problems. I would highly recommend this RAM to anyone! (No, I do not profit in any way from Kingmax- I just swear by their product!)

Those benchmarks were after I did all my tweaking. That's about all I can get. My 3dmark score is a disappionting 3494. My cII@980 got just as good of a score in 3dmark. My temps are ~111-113 deg F at full load with a case temp of 69 deg F and outside temp of 68 deg F. I crack RC5 24/7 so it's at full load always.

FWIW: When I got my board and CPU this week, I picked up 2 "generic" sticks of 256MB PC133 from mwave, and they turned out to be 7.5ns CAS2 Infineon. Not bad for $110 each and my mem scores have been about on par with everyone else's (507 ALU 552 FPU).
This board combined with decent memory is a killer combination for a fast and stable system.

I just sold my Epox 8KTA3 for the KT7A....The Epox was fast & stable - Duron 800 @ 1015 (145 x7) but not much to tweak.

Went for the RAID version cause I'm running out of IDE channel with LS120, ZIP, Burber, CDROM & 1 Drive.

Also bought 900 TBIRD, but will be end of week before I get my precious cargo.

Hoping to get to 1.1 GIG.

For those that have it up and running. I am planning on getting this board and a 1.2 Tbird. I am not planning on overclocking it so I settled on a Chrome Orb for the fan heatsink, but I read on the Plycon website that the heatsink needs modifying for the KT7, but it mentions nothing about the KT7a...What CPU coolers are you guys using and what do you recommend?

-D

just say no to ORBS on the socket A platform... get a taisol or a stock coolermaster or something. the orbs don't cool very well and cause the socket thermosister to show lower than
actual temps... take a look around here and you will surely find alot of negative feedback about the ORBS... mostly from our own mikewarrior2.

I'm using an Alpha 6035 with the quiet fan from plycon... my Duron runs idle 98F/37C. I like quiet. This is at 960Mhz
