I need help. I am trying to install 98SE on my new setup. It boots up and recognizes the video card, floppy, and CD drive, but when I put in the boot disk it says loading Windows95 (only boot disk I have) and takes me to the a: prompt. I try to access the CD drive (Plextor8/4/32) by guessing which letter it is,but none of them work. How do I get it to recognize the cd drive? Thanks.
 
I don't think the win95 boot disk has CD rom support. However, if you have win98 second edition, you can just put the CD in the drive, and set your bios to boot from CDROM first. It will then flawlessly start win98 setup from the CD directly without needing a boot disk. just remember to set your computer to boot back from C once your done with the installation
 
Thanks for the advice. I tried it and it finally actually attempted to access the cd drive, but it said "failure and moved on to the 2nd and 3rd boot options. I failed to mention the first time that it is a 98se upgrade disk. Should it still be able to boot or does it have to be a full edition? Thanks.
 
Hmm... if your referring to a win98 boot disk, then yes, you should be able to boot from it. Just boot from the disk, and you should get 2 options that are

"Boot from disk with CDROM support
Boot from disk without CDROM support"

You would want to pick the first option
 
must have win98 boot disk for win98/ win95 disk for win95/ winME disk for winME... You should be able to make one of of the cd if you can get it to boot from cd (sometimes not so easy)
 
also if you HAVE win95 on and are upgrading to win98se, load up the os and put in the cd amd win95 will reboot to cd. Otherwise, come up with the right boot disk.
 
I was referring to the 98se upgrade CD not a 98se boot disk. Sorry for the confusion.

I am not able to boot from the cd and I dont get the two options at all.

I am installing this on a brand new clean setup.
Is there a way to make a 98se boot disk on the machine I am typing on (Win95..95a as a matter of fact) using the 98se cd?

You probably already figured out this was my first build.

Well after an hour or more of trying to find the win98se bootdisk on the web (I tried several that didn't work) I found this wonderful bit of info that solved my problem..

Create a Windows 98 startup disk
Create a boot disk using a computer that is already running Windows 98, or use the boot disk creation utility found on the Windows 98 CD. On the Windows 98 CD, run the program fat32ebd.exe which is found in the \tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd directory. This is a DOS based program, so there aren't any problems running it from DOS, Win31, or Win95.
