Finally got my new system booted, loaded (running win98) and has been running fine. I still need to do some tweaking, etc., but a short time ago it reset itself for no apparent reason. I was doing a search on Alta Vista.
One problem I do have is adjusting the monitor correctly.
Can't get it to fill the screen properly. But it has still been usable and was going to come back to that. After this reset picture shifted to the left, leaving blank area on right side.
Thanks in advance for input.

The VIA KT133 chipset has some problem with certain drivers in Windows 98...

Before we assume that the chipset is the problem let's take a couple of things into consideration. How many watts is your power supply? A reboot could be caused by not enough power getting to all your components. Also, do you have the 4 in 1 drivers installed? How about all the latest drivers and Bios... If this does not help your problem it may be a chipset problem. I personally have an Abit KT7 Raid also and had all kinds of problems in Windows 98. The computer would reboot, or give me green lines on start up and freeze the computer. USB would also dissapear for no apparent reason.

There are steps to get Windows 98 to work correctly, some steps include deleting certain files that are installed by default by Windows that are not necessary for operation.

Instead of messing with that I decided to get Windows ME, which fixed all of my problems. If your interested in trying to fix Windows 98 check out this page:

It helps out a lot.

Hi Redshirt,
I've got a 300W PS. I will check that site out and will definitely upgrade to ME sometime down the road. The reboot problem seems to have settled down at the moment, but you know how that is.
Right now I'm having a problem getting my monitor to look right. It's an old compaq and I'll try using it awhile. I think this particular problem is me......haven't had that much experience adjusting this video stuff.
Thanks a million for reply.

You could try to adjust your refresh rates. Maybe your old Monitor can not handle refresh rates above 60 hertz or so (depending on what res you run at). Windows might not completely realize what your monitor can handle and feeds information to it too quickly.

Sorry Bud, I get the same thing with Win ME. Try being less aggressive with some of your memory settings. It's rough to set everything to off or low, but ya gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. Of course, the latest build of IE is the perfect candidate to set a problem like that off.

(the game "Project: I'm going in" is a great test of your memory, if I put 4 way interleave on, the game will kick out as soon as a level loads up.)

These kt7 raids and athlon's have a mind of their own sometimes.
