Ive just built up a new system.

If i install the sound card drivers manually via device manager, no problem. However if i install the Soundblaster Live Software (which installs the drivers) the machine will not boot into windows, just gives error message "Windows Protection Error - Restart Machine"

Solution : Boot in safe mode, uninstall software and the machine will reboot windows no problems then reload the drivers manually. However no Liveware software !!

Also i tried to put in my old Soundblaster Vibra Card with exactly the same probs as above ??

My previous system was also a ABIT Board (BX6) with the same Cards and Ram etc and the card plus the live ware software worked no problem at all.

NEW System specs

Windows 98 System Software
AMD 600 MHz
KT7 Raid Board
196 MB SDRAM
Soundblaster Live
Viper 770 Video Card
ATM card

NB PS i have checked the IRQ addresses and it does not appear to be a conflict.

Please Advise

Which slot is your Live! in? Even though no conflicts are listed, something may not want to play nice. What IRQ's are being used by what?

I have mine in slot 2, no problems here. My modem was interfering with a Irq 7 port, I went to control panel, system and put the sb 16 emulator on print sharing and alls well.

I have a regular KT7 and an SBLive! value in slot 2. I get the exact same error (Windows Protection Fault), but only when I am shutting down Windows. It's odd, as I have had no other conflicts/stability problems with the card/mobo.

edit: oh yeah, I'm using Windows ME.

you need to get the latest liveware if you want to use it with your setup. Liveware3.
Liveware that comes with the card will give BSODs on systems with cpus faster than 500Mhz.

I have met the SAME problem with my abit Kt7-raid and SB Mp3
I got the solution from go.to/kt7faq.
The answer is quite simple, diable "creative SB16 emulation" in
the device manager (not remove). Then try to install the software again.
"SB16 emulation" is for DOS, it can not share IRQ with other device.
it seems that installing the sb software will introduce the conflict of IRQ.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the help, it seems likely that the disable the SB16 emulation is the best bet, but i cant get to my machine for a few hours (troubling thing called work). However Creative technical department emailed with a wonderful piece of advice

"Dear customer,

This should be the conflict between the Liveware! and the software which you install in your computer. If it still occurs problems, try to install the sound card under fresh Windows.

Rgds,

Technical Support "

Woe is us if thats the best Creative can come up with !!!

Problem with conflicting KT7 board and Creative Soundblaster Live card is sorted :

Creative - Suggested new Via 4-in-1 Driver - This had absolutly no effect.
ABIT - Suggested that PCI Slot 3 & 5 had problems with the above Card. - WTF !!!

Anandtech - Suggested disable the SB16 emulator via the Device manager - CORRECT

Well there you go boys

The problem is sorted and i have working Liveware 3.

I don't know what you guys have going on here, but I have SB emulation enabled without any problems. I do have an older SB Live Value if that makes any difference. But I guess if it works, then so be it. It's not like I have a use for SB emulation anyway and it's sharing with the LPT port which I'm not using.
