Well, I've got everything else for this system (600 Mhz Duron) except the MB.

I can get the KT7 for about $138 shipped (no tax), or the 8KTA+ for about $120 shipped (inc tax). I know the KT7 is probably the 'gold standard' for Socket A boards, and $18 isn't so much, but any other comments/votes are welcome.

thanks
Mike

1 vote for the epox 8kta+ here. Just got mine up and running 2 day's ago and couldn't be happier. I haven't had one problem with it so far. A very user friendly board. Has the dip switches for easy oc'ing. And a great price. Got mine at bunta.com for $102.00. With s&h...$114.83. Shipping's kind of high. But for the price it's a great board. I am very pleased with it. Also it got the OCworkbench.com "Highly recommended" award.

Well good luck on your decision. Took me awhile to decide between asus, abit, and epox. You probably can't go wrong with any of those. Anyway I'm very happy with my choice. This is/was my first attempt at building a computer and everything's turned out pretty good so far. So here's one for Epox.

Nothing extravagant:

Duron 750
SB Live MP3+
Diamond Viper v770
Sony Spressa 8x/4x/32x

So, Timekeeper, what made you drop the Abit for the Epox??

I think either board will work fine for me; I like the ISA slot that the MSI board doen't have (less upgrades to purchase!).

i have a 8kta, the one without the jumpers. i picked it up at a local retailer about a month ago (best board i could find in town) and it has povided me with the most stable system i have ever been on. durring heavy multitasking the other day i opened up another app and saw a blue screen that said my page files were full, so i hit spacebar and closed out some apps and all was well; i swear i have never seen that error before, probably because most systems would just lock up at that point. also it is running my old pc-100 cas3 at 133mhz cas2 and that was the only thing even close to a memory related error i have ever seen, got to love that:)
i have thought about upgradeing to the "+" to see how far i can push this copper 750, but i think i might hold out for a ddr board. but when i do upgrade im sure Epox will still be high on my list of choices.

chmike:

There are couple reasons I pick Epox over Abit..

1. it is cheaper...( everyone knows I am cheap :) )
2. Abit's CPU socket is way too close to PS. ( I have mid-tower )
3. Abit has this sudden reboot problem....EVEN at default speed.
4. What's w/ this green line on top of window w/ my MX card? (it doesn't happen to my Epox)

5. I can assign IRQ to specific PCI slot on Epox. (this is very important to me, due to the fact, I have running my PC for DV editing and I definitely don't like to share IRQ amount devices, IEEE 1394/SCSI/NIC/Video/Decoder)

6. I am running T-750@950@1.75V@39 degree extremely stable, where I need 1.85V@ 43 degree on Abit. ( This may not be totally accurate if "burn-in", does take into consideration)

7. MEMORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My generic PC100 doesn't work w/ ABIT? why?

8. Bio update on Epox is easy as "Alt + F2" at boot up. yeap! that's only two key you have to press to upgrade your BIOS.

9. At first, I totally disregard what people say about "..problem w/ KT7" on Motherbaord forum....... I have learned my lesson.

10. What's w/ all these "best choice" logo on Abit's board? How much do they pay all these site? ( It is like getting those e-mail telling you that you can earn up to $100000 a month at home......hahah......If I know how to make 100g a month at home, trust me, I will never tell you!!!!)

THERE IS, HOWEVER, A DOWNSIDE on all these VIA BOARD. It seems CLEAN INSTALL is MUST for your SYSTEM to RUN perfectly???????

Hmmm, green line with an MX card sounds bad. I don't get the thing about assigning an IRQ to a PCI slot, I thought the KT7 had that already. I'd like to know in detail more about the sudden reboot problem. Yes, I too am trying to decide between the KT7, the 8KTA+ or 8KTA2...and I just read the K7T Pro2 review...damn decisions.

My EP-8KTA+ and duron 650 will be here monday. Glad to hear all these good comments about it. The reviews I read were positive but there wasn't much for user comments in these forums about it. I feel alot better about buying it now.

Congrat's spencer...Good luck with it all...I think your going to love the board...Especially for the amount of performance you get for the money. It's a quality board.

Enjoy...

I thought I had done all the research necessary to purchase a new board. I had decided on a KT7 RAID. Went to my local shop to get one today but was told they have no stock. They said they sent back their entire shipment because everyone they sold or tested suffered from a spontaneous reboot problem. So, back to the drawing board... Epox huh?

"1. it is cheaper...( everyone knows I am cheap )"

makes sense, but you get what you pay for

"2. Abit's CPU socket is way too close to PS. ( I have mid-tower )

seems you didnt read this... and in fact, i have seen this problem on many via based motherboards including the abit kt7raid, abit ka7, and the fic sd-11. heres how you fix it...

I get a blue screen with a green line at the top after restarting.
Tape detection seems to cause this problem. Removing MSBackup will not solve this problem in itself, and so it is necessary to remove, or preferably rename, the following files.

[C:\windows\inf ]
pnpwfdc.inf
pnpwide.inf
pnpwtape.inf
pnpwppt.inf

[C:\windows\system\iosubsys ]
drvwq117.vxd
drvwppqt.vxd
drvwcdb.vxd

See also "Windows 98 hangs or reboots during startup or at desktop!" below.

Windows 98 or Me hangs or reboots during startup or at desktop!
This again has been reported as being due to a problem with the Seagate device driver files. One user who is a small system builder has reported that renaming drvwppqt.vxd and drvwq117.vxd solves the problem. They experienced the problem on motherboards from seven different manufacturers and found the above solution to be successful.

because its generic maybe ;)

". At first, I totally disregard what people say about "..problem w/ KT7" on Motherbaord forum....... I have learned my lesson."
these problems are easily fixed, maybe your know-how isnt where it should be ;)

"10. What's w/ all these "best choice" logo on Abit's board? How much do they pay all these site? ( It is like getting those e-mail telling you that you can earn up to $100000 a month at home......hahah......If I know how to make 100g a month at home, trust me, I will never tell you!!!!)"

sad, but true.
