I've got a 30gig IBM 75GXP ATA/100 HD running on an Abit KT7 (which only supports ATA/66).
I've got it hooked up with an ATA/66 Cable, and it reads as UDMA/66 on boot up. I also enabled DMA under WinME. However, I am experiencing MAJOR performance problems. The computer would completely freeze for about 1-2 seconds, prompted by excessive flashing of the HD light (this only happened when I was running HD intensive tasks, like playing games). I ran an HD Tach benchmark: about 35Megs/sec transfer at 9.3ms average seek time.. Pretty decent. But then, I looked at the CPU utilization... a whopping 94.5%!!!
I turned off DMA in WinME, transfer rate went down to about 15M/sec, CPU was at 84%.
I set the drive to PIO4 mode in bios with DMA off in Windows; transfer rate went down to about 6M/sec, w/ CPU utilization still at around 80%.
My system is:
Abit KT7 mobo
T-bird 800mhz (not o/c'ed)
Creative labs Geforce2 GTS 32MB DDR
MX300 Sound
1 NIC (PCI)
1 SCSI adapter
256MB RAM
I've got the latest BIOS for the motherboard as well.
Any ideas why the CPU utilization would be so high? How can I fix this? I tried the same benchmark on my other computer, which also has an IBM HD, and the CPU read 4% utilization, which is what it should be. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
