KT600+ booting problems

Hello people,

I recently purchased a barebones kt600+ and 512mb of PC3200 memory (Ultra Brand) from tigerdirect abd now when I try to boot it sometimes boots but doesn't get far (I used the Insert key trick)

Now for some strange reason I get a high pitched sound and I don't know what is causing it.

I also would like to know if a TNT 2 card is AGP 1.5V spec or 3.3?

Thanks.

I'm pretty certain that the TNT 2 card is AGP2x at the most, given its age. You really should try and get a newer graphics card (since nice ones can be had for under $85), because the KT600, last I saw, doesn't support AGP 2x. I know because giga-byte's manual on my GA-7VT600 1394 says that.

If you search, you can probably find out precisely if it is 2x. If it is AGP 2X, then I'd be inclined to say that it is your problem, since they said you will get bad results when trying to use a non 4X/8X card in them.

Good luck.

What kind of bad results?

I was going to try to use a Microstar-8815 Pro card. I'm not sure if it's 2x or 4x, but it's "universal" keyed, so it fits in the slot for the KT600 mobo.

FYI, I emailed ECS and they confirmed the board supports 4x and 8x.

Hello,

I checked the specs of the cards and it says its AGP 2/4x could that be the problem?
http://www.nvidia.com/page/pg_20010530294550.html

I think I might have found the real problem is that it could be overheating since I hear a long high pitched sound (like screeching tires). From what I got from the manual is that since the CPU is multiplier locked that I don't have to change the dipswitches (I feel so 1980s with dipswitches on a motherboard that is newer than my NF1).

Do you think I should stick in an extra case fan? The barebones system I got has no fan in the back and none in the front. It does have it on the clear plastic casing part and I am using a boxed AMD 2700+ with the cooler (albeit using the darn pad thingy (although it only covers the core)

If you want this is the barebones I bought: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=623836&CatId=1218 except it was with the KT600+ motherboard.

Thanks.

Just an update, I had the cpu fan in backwards ARGH..... AMD should really do something about this archaic method of cooling the cpu honestly. One mistake crack the core and then what? You're SOL.

I will be testing my chip tomorrow and hope that it works. Well turns out my TNT2 card is AGP 2x and that's why I was having probs but it was a 1.5V card.....

I haven't that this much problems before and I've built 2 computers, this is my first barebone system I guess I'd be better doing things myself :(
