Kt400 "Chipset Fan" on a Soyo Kt400 Dragon Ultra

PC: Soyo Kt400 Dragon Ultra Black (VIA Kt400/8235 Chip).

The Northbridge Chipset Fan Makes A lot of Noise. The "Pitch" of the noise varies from 'tolerable' to rather 'annoying & loud'.

I un-plugged the Fan & Booted the PC to make sure that it was the Northbridge Fan making the noise. IT WAS. I immediately then shutdown.

Is that Loud Noise Normal (Bought PC Used) ???

Is the Chipset Fan Going Bad ???

How can I make it Quieter ?

I did an AT Search under Chipset Fan.

A Link for a Suggested HS for a MSI Kt3 Ultra

Will that Zalman Work on my Soyo Kt400 ???

Any Other Suggestions ???

FYI: Using SOYO Hardware Monitor---Current TEMPs CPU=34C, CHA=29C

Any Help would be Appreciated

Thanks

Can you peel the sticker off the top of the fan blade? If so, it might give you access to the bearing and then you can add some lubricant and quiet it that way. I used silicon grease on the cheap sleeve bearing fan on my Abit and it hasn't given me any problems in 5 years.

Unplug the fan and enjoy the silence, it's probably completely unnecessary.

I thought of that right after I booted with it Un-plugged. No more Noise.

But; Will the Northbridge Overheat with the Fan Un-Plugged ?

Should I Remove the Fan, Leaving on the HS, being the Fan will no-longer be used(un-restrict the Airflow) ???

There does Appear to be a Sticker on the Fan. It has the SOYO Logo on it.
I certainly could try that.

Do have to put the Sticker Back On Afterwards ?

Disconnect the Fan or Grease it ?

I'll Definetly Try Greasing it.

Are you sure un-plugging it is Safe ?

Thanks for the Help

Put the sticker back on because it will either attach little cover for the bearing or actually BE the cover for the bearing. Just use a toothpick to stick some silicone grease in there. (You can get some at Radio Shack).

How much Silicone Grease should I put in there ?

Also, being its Only a Sticker, What if I damage the Sticker Taking it off ?

I sure appreciate the Help

You can grease the fan all you want but if the bearings are shot - which they are - all you'll do is buy a little time (weeks).

And you DO need the fan unless you replace the whole HSF with one with longer fins.

I hate Northbridge fans. I usually replace them with a Zalman northbridge heatsink. It does involve removing the mobo though.

Alternately you can call the mobo manufacturer and ask them to send you a replacement fan.

Or you might be able to rig another fan to take it's place.

I'd be willing to bet that the fan is all show and not needed. Unplug it, your NB won't overheat unless you're living in Death Valley.

That figures, i was all set just to have to Grease it.

I've seen those "Zalmans" mentioned here at AT while I was doing a 'Search' on "Chipset Fans"

This; Right ?

Hadn't thought of that.
How Long will that (obviously cheap) Fan Last ?
Are they Loud from the Factory ?

That's definetly a possibility, I do know Manufacturers like to "Jazz" Stuff up for Sales, even when not necessarily needed.

Unplugging does concern me though.

Question, I have Soyo HardWare Monitor v1.1. Right at this Moment my Listed Temps are CPU=32C & CHA=27C is that CHA the Northbridge Temp. ?

Solution: If that CHA is the Northbridge Temp Reading, I could unplug it, then monitor that Temp Reading. Do that now(it's getting fairly noisy, plus i do believe it's causing Fluctuations on the +12V Rail: Readings, randomly, are seen as low as 10.17, as High as 14.33 coinciding with "Sound Pitch" changes), then order a Replacement Fan from Soyo, "Just-n-Case"

Thanks for the Help

Edited to Add Below

I went to the Local PC Shop to get a Replacement Fan, as expected, they didn't have one that would fit. So, remembering what MDEsaid, that he figured the Fan wasn't really needed, I bought the Zalman Heatsink (in stock) $9.99

My Case has open "Spots" behind the MB. So maybe I wont have to take the MB out of the PC, I hope so anyway.

Thanks for the Advice

I pulled the fan from my KT400 Dragon Black MB for the exact same reason. Worked just fine on the stock HS for over a year, although this past summer on really hot days I was running into overheating problems, but I think that was CPU related.

Did you just unplug the fan or did you Remove the Fan ?

I may try that. I bought the Zalman HS yesterday incase it starts Heating up.

Do you use the Soyo HardWare Monitor ?, If you do: What's the CHA Temperature Reading ? ( where is the Sensor Reading coming from, the Northbridge ?, or Where ? )

Thanks for the Reply

Sorry for the delayed reply, I forgot I had answered a question in here. 🙂

Anyhoo, I removed the fan entirely. I'm not at home right now, and I think the monitoring software I have installed is still MBM5. I can try checking later what the other program reads. I know when I was having problems the BIOS temperature readings were showing the CPU soaring into the 90°C+ range.
