KT333 gripes

I have been frustrated with these boards. I finally opted for the ECS board with lots of complaints.

1) Power LED connecter needs to be modded to work??? I don't want to mess with that!
2) Can't figure out how to disable RAID (bios or jumper settings unknown) since i don't use it (at least for now)
3) Two systems 1900+ & 1800+ give similiar memory benchmarks with sisoft professional even though they use different samsung orig 2700ddr & crucial 2100ddr rams both 2.5cas
4) SiSoft reports 2700 memory running at 266speed even though bios memory setting is correct. It also reports a kt266a chipset which i am guessing since kt333 is largely based on it (???) Also reports similiar or lower scores than the reference kt266a/2100ddrcas2 chipset & memory benchmark.
5) I thought i was getting more usb support! Not just two back ports and four board connectors which aren't even compatiable with my enlight 7250 front usb connectors! (5 pin with spacing instead of 4pin) What the heck do I do with that?

I read the anandtech roundup, but can you give me some insight into why i feel like the kt333 is giving me what I thought it would? I want to know which boards have raid controllers that cannot be disabled at all like the ECS I have. I really want to avoid those when I RMA my boards and exchange it with something I can work with comfortably.

ppl w/KT333 boards plz post comments on any of the above :frown:

Well, I have an Asus A7V333 with the VIA KT333 chipset and an Athlon XP 1900+. However, I don't know what you're talking about. All I can tell ya is I'm delighted with mine. Yeah, I know.....useless post, but I'm bored heh.

edit: It's not clear what the problem is with the PowerLED connector, so I took out my initial recommendation for fear I'd misinterpreted the problem. Please clarify a bit... something doesn't match up? It might be Enlight's problem, not ECS's.

You didn't mention what BIOS you have, but I see at their site that the latest BIOS adds support for 166MHz (333DDR) RAM. If you don't have this version, chances are that some of your issues arise from that. Don't expect too much real-world benefit from 333MHz operation anyway... the AthlonXP CPU can only digest 266MHz worth of it.

There may be a patch that gets Sandra to recognize KT333. You could rummage around on their site. Ah yes, here we go: http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/common/qa/det_chip.htm

I don't see any method of disabling the RAID, either in BIOS or with a jumper, in the manual. I have an Asus A7V333-RAID and the RAID is disabled by jumper if desired, for what that's worth.

Also, Enlight is not sharing any info with the public regarding the pinout of their front USB :| so I can't help you there. You could get an Antec EasyUSB to go in a vacant 5.25" bay, or a powered USB hub that goes in a 3.5" bay, if you wanted front USB. It certainly is handy.

An xp1800 or xp1900 running on a KT333 board will not use more bandwidth than is available with 2100ddr ram so you wont see a diff between 2100 and 2700. Also a Kt266 board with cas2 ram compared to a Kt333 board with cas2.5 ram might be shown to run faster cause it is lower latency ram. The chipset doesn't improve performance that much on the current XP processors alone.

anyone have the MSI KT3 ULTRA board?

if so, can the RAID controller be disabled via jumper or bios?

that might be the only thing that might prevent me from buying it.

You can disable RAID on the Ultra ARU in the BIOS. It really ticked me off that the Power LED didn't go in the right way!

I'm going to be swapping boards soon.

Do I have to re-install windows since I'm going to be using another board with the same chipset? Initially it sounds safe not to, but I'm not 100%. Anyone know the facts (rather than speculate) about this?

also, AMDMB posted a decent info on the new KT3 ultra board here

Heck, I've gotten Win98SE to go from SiS735 to KT333 with no reinstallation. 😀 If you run Win98SE you will probably get away with it. Win2k... I'm giving odds 60:40 against success. WinXP... no idea. 😕

XP, ehh....iffy 🙂 after all the silly nuances I had, I don't think it's worth it not to reinstall. might be ok with the same chipset...but if you think win2k is iffy, XP is more iffy I'd imagine 🙂

i know that the power led connector mod is just an ecs thing, it is like that on every ecs board i have seen...

i have a gigabyte 7vrxp (kt333) and i havent had any problems with it..

running a thunderbird 1.4 512, crucial 2100 ddr @ 2700, and a radeon 8500le

Could I have more feedback on MegaPlanet's statement "An xp1800 or xp1900 running on a KT333 board will not use more bandwidth than is available with 2100ddr ram so you wont see a diff between 2100 and 2700. "

I was going to upgrade my 2100DDR Ram to 2700. Is this a waste of money? Should I go 3200DDR or is that also a waste of money? I thougt the difference between KT266 and KT333 was using the higher speed RAM.

I have an Epox 8K3A+ rev 1.2
