Hi,
I'm hoping you can suggest some possible solutions for the following problem that I'm having with a week-old system.
Symptom
1. If user is already logged-in, system resets itself whenever network cable from cable modem is connected to NIC.
2. If network cable connected at boot-up, user attempts at log-in cause system to reset itself.
3. If nothing plugged into NIC, system behaves normally (runs 3d games, office apps etc).
4. System will not boot from CD-ROM or floppy reliablily unless all three boot devices in BIOS are set to either CD or Floppy.
System Spec:
MSI KT3 Ultra
PC2100 Crucial 256MB DIMM
Duron 1200 Retail
Surecom Realtek-based NIC
Antec 300W PS
ATI Radeon 7500
Windows XP Professional (fresh install)
What We've Tried So Far:
1. Move Surecom card from PCI slot 2 to PCI slot 4 and then to 5 ---> No change
2. Replaced Surecom with D-Link in Slots 4 and then 5 ---> No change
3. Tried both the Surecom and the D-Link in another PC with the same Rogers cable modem ---> Behaves normally: able to get on-line and no resets/crashes
[/b]Hypotheses:[/b]
1. Since Network Cards (both) worked fine in second system, safe to say not the NICs
3. Since Powersupply is a few months old (Feb/March) and worked fine the whole time, probably not it.
4. Boot device problem with Mobo could be indicative that problem lies with the motherboard
Complications:
System is 300 miles away from me now.
Any ideas on what to try next? Should I conclude that the Board's bad and return it? Should I flash the BIOS and see what happens?
Thanks in advance for your help!
