Hi. i have a Soltek SL-75DRV2 mobo and the chipset fan has been making a whine lately. The thing is so small that i don't think it would make any difference if i just unplugged the thing. i don't know much about chipsets but i hear that the fans don't do much. i was just wondering if it would hurt to pull the plug on my chipset fan ? i've seen some passive options, like Zalman's deal, but it doesn't look like it's worth the money or effort. i'm running an XP1800 at factory settings. any input would be appreciated...thanks.

If the noise is bothering you i would replace it, and not simply unplug it. The manufacturer would not put it on there if it wasnt needed. My Abit KR7A has a kt266a chipset and it has a heat sink and fan also. I dont think it would be wise to remove it.

My mobo only has a heatsink on the KT266 chipset - there is no fan. The heatsink doesn't really get that hot (I've checked it), so I think a fan is probably unnecessary. Just make sure you have some kind of heat sink on the chipset.

Same here - my KT266A mobo doesnt have a fan on the Northbridge heatsink.

Interpret that as you will, but then again if you dont want a fan you could always put a bigger heatsink on there.
