KT266A as stable as AMD 760?

Hi All,

I have an Abit KG7Raid (amd 760) and am considering getting an Abit KR7ARaid (kt266a) to replace it.

Is the KT266A setup as stable as the AMD 760 in your experience?

I already tried posting this in alt.mainboards.abit and all I got was troll/flame war. I am hoping that individuals that have experience with both can give me some insight.

I haven't used an Abit board for either, but the FIC I used for the 760, and the A7V266E for the KT266A are both amazingly stable. I would give the edge to the FIC board, but it sacrifices a lot of performance for that stability. You are more likely to get program and problems with other hardware then either of those boards though.

I have an Athlon XP 1700 running 1650 on an Abit KR7A-RAID since around XMAS running very stable...very nice board for o/cing..I can not give a direct comparsion on stability but would but it up against AMD 760 Abit anytime....

BTW:
Athlon XP 1700 at 1.85v 11x150
Memory at 2.65 v
Crucial DDR ram 512 total as 2x256(got from BB for $25 a stick..just before prices hit the roof..wish I bought 3or 4 sticks).....cas 2-2-6-2T

It is at 6 not 5 precharge since I am using the HPT 372 controller for my HDD and it was recommended for stability to do this..1T is too aggressive for my memory and many others running 2 sticks of ram

BTW why would you want to upgrade ..I would bet you will see a small performance difference use the money to upgrade a video card or other hardware..faster cdrw..etc

Hi,

Why would I want to upgrade?

My KG7 is a very good board but is prone to two problems. One is an infinite loop of the nv4_disp.sys which is almost assuredly an Nvidia driver issue and the other, more frequent, problem is the system freezing (generally once a day).

I've upped voltages, played with ram timings and cpu slew rates, tested with memtest86 (which it passed after I raised the DDR voltage a bit and upped the cpu slew rate to '6'), and I still get them. Bios updates do not help. I am running an AMD approved Antec 400w ps and have a very nice Alpha 8045 heatsink. The system is housed in a Lian Li aluminum PC60 case with more than adequate ventilation and cooling.

So I'm just getting tired of the freezes. I know the performance increase will be negligible, but I was hoping for better stability. I want speed AND rock solid stability.

If I was gonna upgrade my AMD 761 board, I would have to go for the Iwill XP333. People are hitting 200MHz fsb speeds easily and it has a 1/5 and 1/6 pci divider. Best of all, no Via anywhere!
