Seeing as:
1) the KT266 & the KT266A are pin compatible;
2) the changes seem to be largely 'tweaks'
3) motherboard manufactures are expected to start pumping them out real quick

does anybody:
1) know anything about the likelihood of a KT266A chipset working on a KT266 designed board?
2) have a KT266 motherboard & a KT266A chipset and fancy testing this pin compatibility (you may need to switch the bios chips as well)

All this because - while i like buying new motherboards every 6 months - I JUST CANT AFFORD IT...

Comments Appreciated - (although I would hate to find out that motherboard makers - have beening taking liberties...)

Err, I've got a kt266 board. You're not getting me to buy a kt266a nothrbirdge, unsolder my kt266, and solder in the kt266a though.

Unless you pay me enough, but then again: You could just buy the new motherboard :).

You gotta be kidding...what kind of mobo do you have? :confused:

---------------------------------------------

Just checked some articles and found that the 266 and 266A are interchangeable. Hmm, even if that means solder wick and/or a solder sucker, this upgrade just might be worth the time. It would be nice indeed if the chip was socketted :)

Article: http://www.pcstats.com/releaseview.cfm?releaseID=679

and specifically: "Since VIA Apollo KT266A is completely pin compatible with existing VIA Apollo KT266 chipsets, current motherboard designs may be updated to support VIA Apollo KT266A with a minimum of effort. More information on VIA Apollo KT266A motherboards can be found at http://www.via.com.tw/jsp/en/products/apollo/kt266a.jsp ."
