KT133A FSB Newbie Question

Hey guys,

This is my first time overclocking, so bare with me. I just got my Epox 8KTA3/Duron 800 setup and immediately tried to overclock. I'm using Arctic Silver, a Taisol HSF, the works. I unlocked the cpu with a conductive pen.

My question:

I'm not for sure this thing is running at 133FSB. I set the multipler to 10, and increased the mobo voltage by a bit, and it seems to be stable at 1 GHZ. When it starts up, it reads:

Amd Duron(100x10=1000)
DRAM =133

Call me a retard, but does this mean that I am running at 133 FSB?

10x100 means your computer is running at a 100mhz FSB while your multiplier is 10. 10x100=100mhz

The only way to get 100mhz with a 133 FSB is lowering your multiplier to 7.5

7.5x133 =996 or something close..its close enough to 100.

running at 7.5x133 is better than 10x100 because your FSB is running at a higher frequency. that means bigger bandwidth and more of your CPU usage and memory running at a faster pace than usual. run it at this and your computer will be the bomb :)

Thanks agent

Do you guys think that my problem is because I have the Epox 8KTA3? I keep seeing posts about guys who can't run at 133. If anybody has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. I've already selected the dipswitch on the motherboard that allows 133.

As far as I remember, in order to set 133MHz FSB operation on the Epox board is through the use of a special jumper on the motherboard, or a setting in the BIOS which effectively opens the higher FSB speeds. Be sure to check your motherboard manual, it has everything you'll need. :)

I saw someone using this board at 150fsb for duron 600 runing at 900MHZ.

Don't know how, but the pci bus will go 37.6, seems to high for me

If you get 1000mhz with a 133 FSB by lowering your multiplier to 7.5 do you have to do the lead pen trick? Hopefully not.

I just put a system together yesterday with the KT7133A-RAID MB/Athlon T-Bird 1Ghz processor and I've already attached the heatsink and fan. It's running at 10x100=1000 right now. All that I really want to do is up the FSB speed, not necessarily overclock (actually underclock ***7.5x133=996***). Is there anything else that I would need to know or do (ie. up or lower the voltage).

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Kizmit, it looks like you have the FSB at 100 and the memory set to HSTCLK + PCICLK which will give you 133 for the memory only. The only real way to tell is to check your BIOS settings.

As previuosly posted, there's a jumper on this mobo to switch to 133FSB. There's a couple of thing to do before you try it. If your memory is infact running at HSTCLK + PCICLK, make sure to set it to just HSTCLK. Set the multiplier to 7X and try it at 100. If it OK, make sure all BIOS options are set to default, other than the 7X multiplier, then change the jumper to 133. If your lucky all will be well. If not, connect all your L7 bridges, just like you did the L1's. This will up the voltage at power on to 1.85v. If all's well, you can lower the voltage in your BIOS, (it will still power up at 1.85 but lower it a few cycles later).

Afrpick, you have to connect the L1s to allow any change in multiplier, increase or decrease.

Thanks DaddyG and guys.

I finally got it running at 133 FSB. I did exactly what DaddyG explained. It's running stable right now at 133fsb X 8 and default voltage. I can't get it to boot though when I try to crank it up just a little. I want at least 1GHZ. Do i need to increase my voltage? Also, is it recommended to up the FSB anymore than 133? thanks guys..

Well 8x133 is about 1060. What does your cpu speed say on boot?

I would guess it's either 800 or 1060. My 1 gig shows 1060 at 8x133.

Sorry, I never actually got it to 1000GHZ. My multiplier right now is 7, so it's running at about 940 or so. I tried raising the mult up to 8, and it wouldn't boot. Do I need to raise the voltage, or raise the FSB in order to get it to POST?

sorry, but yea you need to do the 'lead pen trick.' the chips are multiplier locked, so to unlock them you need to do all the L1 stuff

Kizmit, did you try connecting the L7 bridges just like you did the L1's ?? That will give you 1.85 volts on power on and should give you the kick you need. Just setting the voltage higher in your BIOS is not enough, the cpu still starts up at default voltage.

DaddyG -

Does this procedure permanently lock my duron at 1.85? Am I still able to lower the voltage in the bios after doing this?

I tried setting the voltage to it's highest value in the bios just messing around and the machine wouldn't even boot.

Kizmit, it does not lock the voltage, just the default. You will be able to lower it in the BIOS if you can run it stable a little lower.
