How difficult would it be to remove a Vantec Iceberq4 Pro that is Krazy Glued to the Northbridge? The reason it's glued is because it was too big to lock down. It runs fine but I would rather install the Zalman ZM-NB47J heatsink. Any suggestions on how to carefully remove the cooler?

haha oh man, that was a bad idea, i dont think krazy glue transfers heat very well. id say play some games till it heats up, then turn off your computer and pry it off with a credit card. and make sure you clean off that glue before you put the other heat sink on (maybe carefully scrape it with a razor blade?), and use an epoxy if you're going to glue it, not krazy glue.

ive never done anything like this before, dont hold me accountable if you screw up.

Well, apparently it does transfer heat very well because it has been on there for about 2 months. I play games all the time and it doesn't budge so that's why I believe it will be difficult to remove.

Acetone will dissolve glue... be careful where it lands... plastic doesnt like it either.

you should have only used super glue on the corners with thermal paste everywhere else, not as the actual heat-transfer medium.

I have some thermal paste under there...the glue was so it would stay more than anything else. It has done that job quite sufficiently.

You kinda scrooged yourself there, I think. You could try sealing the mobo in a plastic bag and putting it in the freezer for a time, but I'm not sure how well that trick will work on crazy glue. Perhaps enough.

Thats what people do to take off videocard heatsinks that have thermal adhesive... ive done it before... but like they said... i dont know how it'll work with krazy glue. Just wrap it in an anti-static bag... and let it dry out before you turn it on.

I also have done the freezer removal when I applied HS with AS adheasive...

I think that would work ... providing you didnt glue the entire surface of the chip ...

Crank down your freezer temp (if you can) Put the MB in a into static bag (the one it came in).

(examine your MB and HS first to see where you want to put the screwdriver)

Leave it in the freezer for an hour or so... take it out and unwrap it from bag quikly ...

Take a screwdriver,,, and small piece of 'doubled up / folded' cardboard to put between the MB and screwdriver (so not to damage MB)

,,, and quikly/firmly twist the handle.

___________

I have done this for VC's and MB's .... around 8 or 9 times now ... all with sucess...

But ,,, I didnt use superglue either ...

Good Luck ....

Yea, I also used the twist of the screwdriver on my video card which I superglued a heatsink to. You should twist all four sides gently to loosen it up. You should hear a cracking sound from the glue.
Also try removing it right after the northbridge is warm enough. Just a suggestion.
