Krav maga: anyone here into this?

I took judo for years and have been getting the itch to try something new lately. This looks both interesting and practical. Discuss. 🙂

The practicality of KM appeals to me versus some other martial arts. I wanna get started next month and have been looking around for a good place to start, but there aren't a whole lot of them.

There are a couple places in the metro Atlanta area. I just thought I'd consult the AT Collective Mind before calling them. 😛

My best friend has been training Krav Maga for the last year and half ... needless to say, SHE scares the hell out of me. 😉

Hehe....a women who can kick your ass is kinda sexy. 😀

Hmm, the name sounds Vedic in origin...is this one of those ancient Vedic martial arts forms from India (India being the birthplace of all martial arts...or so I'm told...)

Krav Maga is from Israel and is pretty new martial arts IIRC. I thought Martial arts originated from China...

It's a relatively new form and is the official martial art of the israeli army. I was looking for personal experience with it really.

The origins of a form of kung fu came from India to one of the Shaolin temples and formed the basis of many styles. I heard it was first started off as an exercise because the monks were in poor health. There have been some forms of kung-fu which were developed internally- I heard Tai Chi was one of them.

I decided to do Shaolin Kung Fu instead since I found a class that is just $30 for 4 months. Most of the Krav Maga places around here want people to be in tournaments, wheras I just want to practice the art and spar in class. If anyone knows of a good KM place in Dallas area, please let me know.

i dont think martial arts oringinated from india, china has 5000 yr history, martial arts did not oringinate from shaolin temples, it happend alot eariler, the shaolin style of fighting was created as a way to protect the monks from people that wanted to loot the temple.

tai chi did not came from shoalin temple either, its very fundamentals came from Tao another anicent chinese belief

What I had heard was that Bodhidharma, the same monk who brought Zen to China from India, also brought the influence of Indian martial arts. These teachings form the basis for modern Karate, Tae Kwon Do and, to some extent, Kung Fu. The martial arts were lost in India after the Mughals (Muslims/Moors) invaded. Soon after, the idea of fighting without weapons was deemed foolhardy, as the Mughals praticed swordsmanship and cavalry. Only in South India did the ancient martial arts live on in Dravidian folklore. I actually saw an Indian martial arts demonstration at the Silk Road festival in DC last year, and they compared Indian martial arts to karate and tae kwon do so you could see the similarities/differences.
