Kraft Halts Production of Controversial Road Kill Candy

Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy is shaped like flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels -- complete with tire treads.

TRENTON, New Jersey (Feb. 25) - Production of candy shaped like roadkill has come to a screeching halt.

The decision, announced Friday by Kraft Foods Inc., was the result of an outcry by New Jersey animal rights activists who said the candy encouraged children to be cruel to animals.

"We take comments from our consumers really seriously and, in hindsight, we understand that this product could be misunderstood,'' said Kraft spokesman Larry Baumann.

Kraft plans to stop production as soon as possible and then sell off remaining inventory, Baumann said.

The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy - shaped like flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels, complete with tire treads - hit store shelves across the United States last summer and was supposed to be another offbeat and unusual addition to Kraft's Gummi candy line.

But the nonprofit New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals thought differently. Earlier this week, it threatened petition drives, boycotts and letter-writing campaigns.

Stuart Rhodes, the organization's president, said he never thought his group's efforts would be so successful.

"Did I think it would happen as fast as I did? No. I guess like most people I've become very cynical. All too often it seems that profit rules all. This was refreshing,'' Rhodes said.

The state of New Jersey designates the NJSPCA the enforcer of its animal cruelty laws. Law enforcement takes up a large part of the group's efforts, but Rhodes has stressed more public advocacy since he took over a year ago.

This is the first time the organization has complained to a company about a product, Rhodes said.

Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. is in the process of acquiring the Trolli brand along with other Kraft candy lines as part of a $1.48 billion deal.

That is pathetic. They succeed in stopping a company from making candy that looks like dead animals, yet when they try to tell people to stop eating REAL dead animals, people tell them to fvck off.

I think a big "STFU" would have applied in this case, too.

I think many of the animal activists are way off the deep end, but I have to admire their tenacity. They are relentless and they get results.

It would be great if more citizens brought that same level of zeal to keeping an eye on government.

Or it would be great if the majority (the meat eaters) struck down the vocal minority (militant vegetarians) with great force.

But while it's politically correct for a minority group to yell at the majority, it is forbidden in the PC code for a majority group to yell at the minority group.

Well put.

It's pretty creative to think that because you eat candy that's shaped like dead animals, you'll want to torture animals. I'm pretty sure kids have been torturing animals without any reason for quite some time.

I'm going to cook a steak shaped like a vegetable. That way I can offend the Peta members 2x, both by eating meat, and by mocking them by shaping it like a vegetable.

Hmmm...yet I can buy damn near any shape of animal I want and eat it as a gummy, a cookie or otherwise and they don't bitch. What morons. That goes for both sides, the ones that pressed the issue and the one that caved. Fvcking communist bastards.

You're comparing the SPCA to PETA? I guess it doesn't matter to the AT'ers. Just bring up PETA to stir up the hatred.

BTW, REPOST.

heh, there were some PETA folks protesting a KFC in town today as I drove by.

That reminds me - I have to pick up a few buckets of chicken livers to toss on them yelling "get a job!". Gonna be loads of fun.

Let me rephrase:

Any group that would protest a candy is just as silly as PETA.

What next? Protesting animal crackers?

And this is NOT a repost. The search sucks and I could find no threads with common words in this story.
