kr7a - bad experience times 3!

Okay, here goes. Bought one kr7a and xp1700+ etc. After assembling, it did nothing. Would not even spin the fan. Dramatically dead. Tried everything, and eventually narrowed it down to MB. Bought another one, and it arrived in a slightly different package, in a hard clear plastic "clamshell" inside the box rather than the usual bubblewrap sleave. One of the securing tynes on the plastic clamshell appeard to interfere (in the same spot) with one of the ram securing clips and had actually broken it off the board. Figuing this was a fluke, I bought a third kr7a, which arrived with neat black abit ide cables, but again had the broken ram clip buy the clamshell case. How could they be packaging the board in a box that does not fit!!! How come I got two different types of packages with two different sets of cables. Is abits qc going down? I've been using them for a long time, but this time I am very dissapointed. ANyone else see these problems like dead boards and broken clips? anyhow, take care.

I have the RAID version of that board. I have no problems at all with it. Lots better than the Asus I had (A7V-266E).

Best KT266A board made in my opinion.
Runs solid @ 140 FSB.

Perhaps, in the first board you had a short circuit somewhere with the screw. If I were you, I'd had it taken out of the case and then try it.

Abit is always changing their boards and packaging not to confuse you but to imprve upon it.

I am running my Athlon XP 1600+ on my ABIT KR7A-133 (yep, that's the KR-7A with the newer Ultra ATA/133-supporting VT8233A South Bridge; without the "-133", the mobo has the older 8233 South Bridge that supports neither UATA/133 nor hard drives larger than 127GB). The only problem that I have with it since I bought it last Sunday is its floppy controller is bad. [Good thing I don't save backup files on floppy any more, and I have an IDE/ATAPI LS-120 drive laying around, so I connect the LS-120 instead of my CD-RW drive when I had to re-install Windows XP Professional Corporate version (my copy of which isn't on a bootable CD-ROM) - and then disconnect the LS-120 and re-connect my CD-RW drive after Windows is up and running.]

I bought a refurb fron newegg for $90 buh and it runs my 1600+
solid @ 146 FSB and my GF3 @250/550. This is the best sckt A
board I have used yet. Sorry to hear your troubles, maybe try a
different vendor.

Abit is known for bad quality... this would not surprise me.. that is why i do not buy crap.. 🙂

Every motherboard from every manufacturer that I've ever bought seemed to have either bad quality or bad performance. Thus, either I've had bad luck, or all of the products that I've tried are crap!

LoL.. that has got to suck.. try a Soltek, or a Gigabyte mobo.. they usually make very solid boards almost 100% of the time.

Soltek sucks. One of the worst board I've ever came across.

This is an update on what I've posted about my KR7A-133 having a bad floppy controller:

Well, that problem is now fixed! The BIOS version that was originally installed on my motherboard turned out to be buggy. It was version 6N, dated 12/25/2001, that was the first BIOS revision that shipped with the KR7A-133. Also, it failed to display the chassis fan speed no matter what connector I had tried. Both problems have been fixed by updating my motherboard's BIOS version to 7G (the newest released BIOS version). I still had to whip out my backup LS-120 drive to flash-update the BIOS. But afterwards, the KR7A's floppy controller works correctly! And now I'm getting an RPM reading on the chassis fan (and not just the CPU fan)! WOOHOO!!! 😀 :Q 😀

So now, not only does my KR7A-133 work correctly, I can upgrade my CPU further - to a T-Bred Athlon!! :Q

This sight will usually solve you problems before the Abit bashers get their paws in the thread.
My KR7A Raid board has been rock stable from day one.
And Abit has improved very much so their quality since the old KT7 days.

UPDATE:

It's been three days since I got my KR7A-133's floppy controller fixed... But it wasn't the BIOS version 6N that's buggy; it's that the BIOS version wasn't properly flashed onto the chip at the factory. And after I read the list of several bugs with the 7G BIOS version with regards to its effect on the audio quality, I went back to the 6N version - but not from a backup file; I had to actually download the 6N BIOS from ABIT's Web site. And after that was done, LO AND BEHOLD - the floppy controller still works correctly!!
