KOTOR vs. KOTOR 2

KotOR I has a much better story as well as better dialog options.

However KotOR II made many functional improvements, such as the ability to influence you teammates' alignment, better upgrading and item systems, and much more.

If you think you can play without the features that KotOR II added, then I highly suggest KotOR I. The story and characters really are much, much better.

I wish they make another game/TV/movie with the lady sith lord's voice actress. She was brilliant in KotOR II.

BTW I have played Mass Effect on the 360. Not sure if the PC version would make a difference, but it's one of the first rpgs I ever but down and walked away from without finishing. I got to the part where you are traveling between planets looking for some lost scientist or expedition and could never find them, just found the game play to be repetitive at that point and decide to go play Tiger Woods '09 instead (last year).

Benskywalker,

I think my problem with MMO's is I have never really given one a proper try. I should probably just pick one and give it a couple weeks to see if it works for me or not. I just hate certain "clique-ish" aspects that I am picking up on. Do all MMO's player's refer to their char as 'toons'? Cause I just find that term disgusting and completely out of line with what I want in an MMO. 'Toon' makes me think of the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Seriously is character so hard to say that someone had to start referring to them as toons?

Ya, the secondary missions can become repetitive but you don't have to do them if you don't want.

Sticking to the main story missions cuts out the repetitiveness and keeps things more interesting. I only did the major side quests like the moon AI and I forget the other big ones.

Heh... I feel the same way you do about the term "toon". Most people don't use it. (It refers to WoW's slightly cartoony graphics, as opposed to something rendered more realistically like AoC or LotRO.

I had BLAST playing WoW for PvP. I stayed out of guilds for the most part. I couldn't stand running instances or raiding, just because I never had time to block of X amount of hours in a row.

Give Runes of Magic a shot. It's free, and seems to have everything that WoW has in a slightly less polished state. However, there's some more interesting parts of RoM.

Or just for WoW. It's playable in any way you want. Socially, anti-socially, or a mix... 🙂

I have kotor and plan to load it this week and "get busy". I really wish SWTOR was coming out soon or at least had a target release date even. If anything will help me deal with any shortfalls I find in the MMO world, weilding a lightsaber will. I know SWG is an option but from what I have heard echoed over and over, I should far, far away, play anything else and wait for SWTOR.

Toon was around before WoW, iirc.

Anyway, I can't believe the next KotOR is an MMO. It completely ruins the game...

I've never understood why people bash on 2 so much. Even if the story isn't on par with the first one the functionality is light years ahead. And let's be real, what could possibly top the story of #1? 😉

If you played it when it first came out it was so incredibly buggy and pretty much just plain broken that it made the experience as much of a pain in the ass as it was enjoyable when it was working. They didn't just fail to finish the game with a proper ending, they failed to finish it on an acceptably functional level...KOTOR was far more polished in comparison.

I will agree though, KOTOR 2 is a better game at the core as it improves upon many aspects of KOTOR, and if you played it on the PC after patches as well as perhaps even the restoration project, KOTOR 2 really does stand a better fighting chance at better competing with its predecessor.

Fortunately I didn't have to deal with bug madness they released on the PC version. I played KOTOR 2 on the Xbox... /ducks. 😉

maybe you didn't buy the game right away and somehow got an updated version, but the bugs I was referring to was specifically about the XBox version...

^ that's why I preferred Obsidian's dark side in KOTOR 2, it was less about being mean and more about gaining strength and power. KOTOR 1's dark side was closer to D&D chaotic evil.

idk, i thought they were both good but kotor one was first so it was probably viewed as better

I will kind of be putting this theory to the test then since I am playing them out of order, of course in an opinion based way.

KOTOR is great. I suggest you play on the dark side.

Yes I think the dark side story is better in KOTOR, and maybe the other way around for the second game.

I enjoyed both games greatly. The ending in KOTOR1 is better, but KOTOR2 seems more polished.

It is best to play the game twice, once for each side. I pick a different class each time to mix it up some.

There is no way KOTOR2 is more polished. It's an unfinished game. There are tons of dialogue that make reference to things that ended up not making it into the game. You can tell that things get more rushed as you progress through the game. The ending is especially badly rushed. The story is so convoluted and a total mess. Sion and Nihilus are just pointless characters that show up randomly for no reason at all and you have to defeat them. They just look cool on the cover but thay have little to do with the plot. Most of the sidekick specific quests and dialogue (lots of it is still in the game files) arent even implemented.

And you can't blame the developers either. The game had a development cycle of about 1 year flat there is no way they could make it properly in that time even though they had all the resources from KOTOR to work with.

I agree with you KOTOR 2 had alot of ambiguosness and it does leave a feeling of disappointment obviously because if the devs had the time to be more thorough this game clearly matches or exceeds KOTOR. The interesting part is that other forms of star wars entertainment seem to be putting together a better picture of this era. like the KOTOR comic series where they give some background on Malak and Scion and hopefully some background is developed for Nihilus who was the most appealing in KOTOR2 but who symbolized how unfinished KOTOR2 was.

Doh, missed this, my apologies for the length of time for the reply 🙂

You can get free trials for most of the games, hard part is most of them have evolved to the point where 'end game' content is significantly better then the early content. Still, for free it doesn't hurt to try one out and see how it works for you.

For the 'toons' thing, unless you play on an actual role playing server yes, everyone calls their character a toon. I think mainly that is because people think of other people as the characters, the toons are just what they happen to be playing at that point in time. Most people I know have multiple max level characters, and the skill of the player gives us a good idea real quick on how effective they will be on any particular 'toon' they may use. IE- guild I'm in now there is a guy I've played with for several years who was one of the top hunters on our server for most of that time. He decided he wanted to be a healer, noone questioned not only his choice but we new instantly because of his skill level that he would be a very good priest even with significantly less experience then other players because of the skills he displayed while playing a hunter(despite the fact that you do nothing comparable playing either class outside of common sense get out of big balls of fire etc). For me, he is the character- the class he is playing is the 'toon' he is using. I have a mage, druid(healer), and a death knight(tank) and I will get grabbed to run a raid or a dungeon by people because of who I am, and will then jump on whatever 'toon' we happen to need.

There are many different dialect shortcuts people use in MMOs, some of them seem very strange at first but you get so that "LFM U25 1OT 3H 4DPS g2g" reads like perfect English honestly 😉

Obsidian wasn't the problem, it was the rushed release.

Well they could of at least decided to patch in the rest of the game after release. Instead they abandoned it.

Yeah KOTOR 1 is better, I played through KOTOR 2, beat it, and BAM WTF it's over, no ending story at all. KOTOR 2 had like a you hit a brick wall hard ending and it really sucked, other than the end, I thought it was pretty good.
