KOTOR crashes 5 minutes into campaign after patch 1.03

I've had KOTOR for at least 4 years now and realized that I had never gotten around to beating it. I'd always get bored about an hour in and forget about it. Well I decided to install it again, so I install it, patch to 1.03 and start her up. I get a warning saying my graphics card doesn't meet recommended requirements, it's a 9800gt and it recommends an ATI 9500... I ignore it seeming it's ones of those things where the game doesn't realize it's being installed 5 years after it's released.

Anyhow I start her up and I get to the jedi battle on the initial ship, about 5 minutes into the game and it crashes. I get a send report to windows box. I try it again and same result, game crashes at the same exact spot. I looked online and found a few suggestions from people. Turn graphics to minimum, turn off vsync, enable software sound, disable sound, run in windowed mode. None of that works, I reinstalled and didn't patch it and I successfully got threw a half hour of the game. Anyone know what might be going on here? I'd like to install the patch seeming it has a rather large list of fixes. Is this a common problem with KOTOR? I mean I run far cry 2, crysis, and cod4 on a regular basis with not so much as a hiccup.

The windows error message said "unknown" so there was no error code to look up at all. Eventually while trying to get it to work my dvd drive lockup up and windows froze, had to do a hard reboot and windows needed to run chkdisk on startup and my dvd drive wouldn't open till it was done. Needless to say it freaked me out, I also got a windows corrupted file error in the toolbar which is something I've never seen before. Tried to uninstall kotor but it gave me a couldn't fine ikernel.exe error and wouldn't do it. Had to do a system restore to before I installed it.

Any ideas? I ran western digital full diagnostic scan and my drive passed. It's stupid because I installed this game years ago on my 32bit athlon system with the crappiest hardware ever and no problem.

Running it on the hardware in my sig with NVforceware 180.48. I'm not going to kill myself if I can't get it to work but just want to know WHY a crappy 5 year old game won't run on my computer that can run crysis on high...

Its not crashing because its being overloaded with graphics.
Your ability to run Crysis has no relevance at all.

Its crashing because it was a fairly buggy game to begin with and its having a hard time with DirectX 9.0C and new hardware.

Just for reference I had an XFX 9800GT and the game ran just fine for me. But I was running Service Pack 2. I hope that shouldnt make a difference.
In one of the very rare occasions I encountered a regular crash or glitch I would simply take my graphics and sound settings down to minimum, play past that part, save, and the go back to max detail.
Managed to get through the whole game with only one difficult section and I cant even recall where it was.

I really, REALLY wish they would make another patch for this game. One that lets it run properly on modern systems.

Or better yet make a redux version, fix the issues/broken content in both titles and sell it as one big game pack for 20 or 30 bucks.

Thanks for replying, I always hate it when software on my computer runs so poorly. I was sort of assuming it was an old buggy game with new hardware/drivers mixed to make this 2 headed monster. I wish Lucas Arts would come out with a new patch that actually worked too but unfortunately they seem to only do that when it's factored into their profit margin, so I doubt they will.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions anyhow, at least I know it's not my PC that's at fault.
