KOTOR 2 seems to be more buggy in Vista

To feed my hankering for decent 3D RPGs, I've been playing through KOTOR and KOTOR2 again. With KOTOR1, I didn't experience any serious problems, except that the game would lock up when I turned on the AA from the in game menu. Turning in on from the CCC worked fine. Widescreen mod unlocked my 1920 resolution, though it did prevent any of the avi cut scenes from playing. Overall, very playable.

Now, KOTOR2, on the other hand, I don't think I will continue very far into this time around. First, there is absolutely ZERO wide screen support when running with the current patch. Second, when I set it to 1600x1200, it defaults to windowed mode every time you exit and get back into the game. You need to change the resolution, and then set it back to 16x12 in order to get full screen again. Thirdly, it seems to be skipping scenes entirely and entering debug mods at random. I didn't catch any skipped scenes until I entered the polar regions on Telos and entered the irrigation facility. The game loaded from the outside to the inside, I was confronted by the Handmaidens and then I was free to go. I thought something was wrong when the conversation with the Handmaiden went something like this.

Handmaiden - Drop your weapons!
Me - I mean no harm, I'm not looking for a fight.
Handmaiden - Okays!

After that I could wander around the facility at my leisure, fully armed. I thought to myself, I remember this happening differently last time I played, aren't I supposed to be disarmed, detained, and questioned by someone? After speaking with the Handmaiden again, it seems that entire part of the game didn't trigger, though the game registers events like it happened. If I attempt to talk to Kreia or Atton, their options all being with "Cheat Mode: Talk to Atton/Kreia"

How can I continue to play the game if its going to skip critical scenes like this?

If I wasn't unemployed, I'd say the hell with it, pick up ME and play that for a while.

That's too bad, it plays almost bug-free in XP. I just finished my first dark side game tonight, managing to corrupt Atton, Visas and Handmaiden into Jedi with dark side mastery.

The ending is weak for both light and dark, but the journey is worthwhile either way.

Now I'm tempted to replay KOTOR 1 even though I have Mass Effect at the top of my unplayed pile.

Check your .ini file. You probably have the fullscreen option set to 0 in graphics options.

It is quite buggy, the game crashes probably once every thirty minutes. Just save often, I quick save after every fight.

I never had that happen to me with Vista x64,mind you I did not use WS mod,I have also tried both KOTOR and KOTOR2 with the Alchemy wrapper for D3D sound which works fine, however KOTOR2 does have a few well known bugs that were never fixed, examples here, you can google the rest.

Only problem I had with KOTOR2 and Vista was the startup problem to do with sound, fix can be found here.

Why even bother with KOTOR2 before the big fix mod comes out?

I didn't have any problems with kotor 2 with my rig in sig on Vista 64. It's a shame its such a poorly support game when a few good patches could have made it a stellar title.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

I really wish Obsidian or LucasArts would come out with a big patch that fixes all the problems and lets it run flawlessly in 98, XP and Vista.
They dont have to rework the entire game, just make a decent patch.

Failing that, they could redo the game from scratch and sell it as Knights of the Old Republic 2: REDUX.

You were correct, the option was set to 0. Wonder how that got set to zero. Doesn't explain the skipping of scenes or the apparent entry into debug mode though.

Team Gizka hasn't posted a WIP since Oct 2007, so who knows when they will release their update. I check their site occasionally, they need more frequent updates to let people know that they are still alive.
