He says the discrediting of the research is to the detriment of all scientists.

"I think it's a very bleak time for science generally that there are people who would fabricate such important work or cover-up anything to do with the truth in science," he said.

"We trade on honesty and facts, and this really astonishingly bad.

"I feel very sorry for all of us in science, because I don't think it reflects well on any of us."

The Seoul National University will announce its final findings on Dr Hwang's work next month.

my understanding is this situation is reflective more of korean academia and culture than all science. Supposedly their culture does not like question/review work of higher ranking and senior positions.

I'm not sure, the whole purpose of science is that it's supposed to be independently verifiable, there's no point if no one bothers to double check.

They do say though this might result in a big shake up of korean academic culture.
 
Maybe this will wake them up. They have such huge inferiority complex that they invent history (a laughable example would be Chinese civilization came from Korea)
