What are the differences? I have an Epiphone Thunderbird bass I am going to sell or trade in for it... so probably a spending limit of about $500. Any suggestions or reccomendations?

In order of quality.
1-American.
2-Mexican.
3-Korean.

There used to be Japanese ones as well. Not sure if that is still the case.

korean are higher quality than mexican as far as strats go.

edit: if your limit is 500 don't buy a strat. If you get a strat you need to buy an american. The best guitar for under 500 is the epiphone les paul. I got mine for 400. I've been a broke guitar player for 11 years and never could get a gibson. you can always switch out the pickups for gibsons anyways.

Epiphone Les Paul

It has been 10 years since I picked up a guitar. But it used to be that Mexican guitars looked great. The korean made strats barely resembled a strat.

Epiphone Les Paul's are one of the best bangs for the buck. But that is a totally different sound.
Heck, skip the Gibson humbuckers and look into DiMaggio's. Just be careful, they are all very different in tones. (Gibson pickups are awesome, DM are's very unique.)
Also, look into Telecasters.

Yeah, I know what a Les Paul looks like...

I'm just looking for a good blues guitar that has that Hendrix/Skynyrd sound. I have had an Epiphone hollowbody for about two years now.

You might consider one of the guitars from Rondo Music. Really happy with the bass I got from them.

Strats are overpriced to begin with - I'd look at some of the knockoff brands. One of the best guitarists that I know has been playing and loving his Hamer stratalike for the last 15 years. There are other guitars out there besides Fender and Gibson.

I'll second the Hamer recommendation. Good sound and playability. If you must have a fender, buy used. You'll get a much better deal. Mexican will be good enough if you're on a tight budget.

well.... a hollow body won't give you a good sound and the Epi Les Paul will. I play hendrix and skynyrd type of stuff and it sounds great....just because you own an epiphone doesnt mean you have to null my advice.

Japanese is the best if you can find one. They quit making them a number of years ago.

Japanese > American > Mexican > Korean

I think you're mistaken. The American has always been on top. The Japanese were second when they were made. Now Mexican is #2 and Korean #3.

My first bass was a Hamer, and it was a POS.

true americans have always been the best types of fenders, but they do make a really nice 70's tele in Japan.

Best sub- $500 guitar I've played:

G&L Tribute (The strat style one). Fantastic build quality (for being a machined-Korean product) and the great thing is they use the same pickups as their American counterparts.

<-- Owns a G&L Tribute Bass. I love how it sounds, but the frets are spread too wide for my liking.

And I've played American Standard strats that weren't worth the price of the strings. What's your point?

It's really a crapshoot. It's best to play them all until you find one that you like then figure in the cost later. I have seen the Corona plant put out some dogs in its day and the Ensenada plant put out nice guitars with just a few finish and tooling mark defects.
