I would like to comment on this. For a long time people were bad mouthing these because the printer comes with a Starter Toner. It does not last that long. The toner has a chip in it that prevents you from re-filling it. If you choose to refill, the printer works at a significantly slower speed.

HOWEVER, there are now chips available thet you can use to replace the chip on the side of the toner cart. I was skeptical but bought one through ebay.....through a company called TonerKing and sure enough the chipped worked.

It reset the toner back to 30o0 pages and is now again ticking down.

You need a new chip each time the chip hits 0.

You still need to buy toner refills.

This is not cheap, but it IS cheaper than the $90 PER TONER I was paying from staples.

Yes this is true I think we all understand the chips on the back the back of the toner, the point is that it's a cheap laser printer regardless of that. The toner controversy rages on, yes it sucks, but hey what are you gonna do, you can buy ink jet and then face a much worse lifespan of ink so it all evens out.

the brother printers (1440 and 2040) aviable for the same/simialr price seem to have cheaper toner. That being said, I got this last fall, and it's been humming along without any problems (cept for the fact that I got a mac a couple months later, which can't be used with this printer).

I have one of these printers and they are GREAT!

Compare the toner price to using a bunch of $30 ink carts, it's a no brainer!

That's really great news about the availability of those replacement chips. Thanks. Gelfling! I got this printer FAR (with a PM) last year. Still using the starter cart. (No, I don't print much!)
