If I'm not mistaken the Veyron's top speed has not been verified, while the Koenigsegg did set the record with the CCR (not the new CCX which should be faster). I think its still set at 241mph.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Veyron

This test, at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test track, reached a top speed of 253 mph (407 km/h).

On another note then, anyone know what the fastest actual production car is? How is a "production car" defined anyway?

407km/h is def not 253mph...but thats wiki for ya...

The Veyron IS the fastest production car. Also I think a production car has to have at least like 10 or so examples produced for the general public

I believe the CCR is faster than the Veyron, and is considered a production car; there was something about it on TV just a week or two ago. I forget exactly what program it was though. 500HP V-8 in a car that is more or less entirely made out of carbon fiber.

I agree with you that it is a production car, but the fastest the CCR has been is 248? (ive only seen it documented for 241), nowhere near the Bugatti's governed 253. Weight does not matter much at that speed, down force is the key. If they really want to make a challenge for the top spot, koenigsegg needs to use the CCX which has like 75% more power...

No kidding. The M5 could be faster than the space shuttle but the Gallardo looks so freaking hot it doesn't matter. I'd take the Lambo over the M5 any day.

Edit-I like that the Vette pretty much destroyed the M6 and definitely beat the modded M5. Hell, the only thing that was close was the Ferrari.

I think it's likely the Bugatti may be a bit faster.

Though the specs of the CCR and CCX are very similar, the CCX should be faster due to better bodywork and a more robust engine. Though they don't mention it, the CCR's block is based on the Ford 4.6L V8 from the SVT cobra, it was "only" good for about 900hp. They decided to go with Granger & Worall, the castings manufacturer for the Veyron and Formula 1 cars, to supply the castings for the CCX. These new castings are good through 1500hp). There were actually a lot of improvements between the two models that don't reflect in the spec sheet. Though they both show 806hp, the truth is very different.

Another thing to consider is the 242.42mph seen by Loris Bicocchi on the CCR was on Nardi, a high speed bowl. This means the front wheels were slightly turned on the entire run, scrubbing off speed. On a dead straight track like Ehra-Lessien, it would definitely have been faster. They estimate 247mph, still a bit shy of the Veyron's mark.

These things considered, I'd personally guess the CCX would be right about neck and neck with the Veyron, though the CCR would probably still be a few mph down from those two. One nice thing though, there's no complete stop, no extra key to turn, no brake to avoid to reach top speed on the CCX, just floor it and go.

Does Michelin supply tires for both the Veyron and the CCR/X? or does another company make such robust tires for the Swedish devils?

EDIT: ahh indeed they do, nice job michelin!

Unique in engine design is the integration of knock and misfiring detection in an ion current system. Because the multiplicity of cylinders means very quiet running and ensures that the velocity difference will be extremely small in the event of a cylinder misfire, cylinder-selective detection by measuring rough running is not reliable enough. Therefore, Bugatti Ion Current Sensing (BIS) is used. The ion current flowing at each spark plug at the timepoint of ignition is monitored by a separate evaluation sensor system. The data obtained is passed to both engine control units. If knocking combustion or a misfire is detected, the associated control unit immediately initiates countermeasures, such as retardation of the ignition timepoint, shutdown of the cylinder or reduction of the charge pressure.

Indeed. At the Michelin booth at SEMA this year:

Koenigsegg CCX
Saleen S7
Fisker Tramonto
Ruf RT12
Pagani Zonda S
McLaren F1 LM
Bugatti Veyron
Caparo T-1

All your favorite cars getting a work out...

Z06, Gallardo, 911 Turbo, F430, M5, M6, RS4 just to name some

Thanks, cool post. Didn't realize how slow the M5 when put up against rivals. That Z06 spanked the M5. Now I want a Chevy.

well i think the m5 is in a class of its own...there is not one single car that does what the m5 can do (production wise.)

Z06 muscle ftw!
