Yeah!!!!! Stick it to the man who sticks it unto others. I hope she gets a truckload of money. More than it would have cost Kodak to store these images in full uncompressed form.

If it's really crappy compression like internet "accelerator" programs use, then by all means, if they were calling it "optimization," they need to be put in check for false advertising. The story is lacking in technical detail, though, so it's hard to make any judgements with only that information. After all, I don't think Kodak makes (m)any cameras today that can store images in a raw, uncompressed format - everything is written with JPEG compression, and in the past, JPEG compression has not been an issue in the cheap consumer cameras like those that Kodak makes.

This story is about compressing pictures without your consent, so I figured it belonged in this forum. If the mods disagree, please feel free to move it.

err

"compressing uploaded photographs and would lead "customers to believe their photos were being optimized, when in fact they were being irreversibly damaged," according to the legal complaint filed in Alameda County, Calif., yesterday. More than 1 billion photos are stored on the EasyShare site."

Completely unethical; I hope the employee doesn't have to pay a price for this customer advocation. Regardless of what the fine print says (even if my reading of it is incorrect) a company offering a storage service doesn't have the right to willfully damage the items being stored without explicit consent. If they had gone through with this plan, I think the class-action lawyers would have had a field day. Sad that in this day of signficantly decreasing hardware costs that the idea Kodak came up with was screwing the customer.
