OK -
so I was passing thru Danbury and the Staples had the Kodak 4900 for $175 on clearance. It is not on their website. That would be $150 less than the nearest pricegrabber price for a non-refurb. and it gets good reviews. 'Course it was Sunday and they could not find the box and sell it to me.

With a 4 meg camera I would not worry about a 2x optical zoom...

The question is: why to Kodak 4mp cameras cost the same as Canon/Nikon 2mp cameras...

maybe because this model is a discountinued model, and there's a new model that already came out, so they want to get rid of their current stocking of it.

I scored my Olymplus D510 when they were clearing it out for $150.00 around October or November at Staples.

Remember, yes, this does only have a 2x zoom but it's also a 4 megapixel camera so it can capture shots similar to 2 megapixel camera could with a 4x zoom (roughly). So this is in fact quite a HOT DEAL...

When buying a digital camera, always look for your needs before deciding solely on price

a) I borrowed & used Kodak's earlier 3Mp version and liked it a lot: it was used at a wedding & party -- only near-shots, so zoom wasn't needed. The camera coped well with all sorts of lighting problems, making nearly every shot a winner.

b) I question your math: "zoom" is linear, pixels is area, so halving the "zoom" requires doubling-squared [4x] the pixels. 2Mp w/ 4x zoom could pixel-match resolution of 8Mp w/ 2x zoom at full-tele... with other issues as well. This 4Mp w/ 2x "matches" a 2Mp w/ 2.8x [2x*sqr-root(4Mp/2Mp2)].

Since I liked the quality of the images the 3Mp Kodak took, I'd probably buy this Kodak. Alas... my heart craves a Canon G3, while my wallet craves a pin-hole camera!

I bought one of these 3/2 for the $174.50 less the 12% customer appreciation (I didn't have any bigger coupons) at Tallahassee Apalachee Pky store. They still had the display model left after I got mine. Sure beats the JamCam I was using!

Question: I think it would be really helpful if someone could find out how to obtain a list of clearance items at staples. Or all the items that end in .80 .98 ect. Any suggestions?

The fun of the chase is to find out what items are on clearance! Sometimes employees will post the clearance items, but that's rare.
