Not entirely true. Some people react worse than others.
I just got back from ROTC Basic Camp at Fort Knox. One of the cadets there got bit by a brown recluse. He swelled up a bit (worse than a normal spider bite), but nothing worse than that.
Also, they do have some medicin they can give you to help flush out the venom, or counteract it or something.
But yah, you want to avoid being bitten if at all possible.
