I've always been under the impression you build a team as a whole. That way your not relying on one person to carry the team.
I guess there's different philosophies in building a team.
When you have a (super) star, you build around him by surrounding him with players that will benefit both the star and the role players.
That was the formula for Jordan and the Bulls for instance.
Jordan was the core, and they surrounded him with role players that specialized in other areas.
Pippen was the defensive specialist, Horace Grant/Rodman did the dirty inside work and the boards.
On a double team, Jordan kicks out to their 3-point shooters in Kerr, BJ Armstrong, Paxson.
That's been the formula for championship teams the past decade or so (Rockets, Spurs).
Take away the core, and the role players are useless.
Take away the role players, and the star has no support.
Add too many stars, and you get the Lakers who couldn't win with 4 all-stars because of their egos and selfishness

The Pistons are a good example of the exception.
They have a group of above average players (no super stars) who don't let their egos get in their way of winning.
I haven't heard of much chemistry problems or complaints of playing time with that team.
