but I'VE NEVER heard the term used to describe people in a gang..

I've also never met a gang member..

Maybe if I grew up in the roughs, then I'd know this..

I grew up in suburbia and knew what it meant....

have you never watched local news, read a newspaper or watched any number of 'crime dramas' on TV?
 
when you hear the term gangbanger in public, it is NOT a reference to porn. Unless it is. And that would be rare.

gangbang, the sex act, also likely has roots in gang members having group sex with either a whore, someone they are raping, or a new recruit. Or in jail, which kind of falls under the latter two.
