known 10/100 compatability issues with older puters?

I was trying to install several 10/100 cards into our existing network (which is stocked with older, but reliable, 3com 10baseT cards). I have 3 NICs with the RTL8139 (a&b) chips and a couple with linksys lne100tx chips. I tried installing them into 3 computers. Two have super socket7 with K6-2 processors, one has an old Asus mobo with p233mmx. Although each computer recognized and installed the cards (all running win98), none would recognize the network (simple peer-to-peer). I had to pop the good cards out and go back to the 3com 10meg cards.... any thoughts??

I have Linksys 10/100 NICs running in a P75 without problems... Therefore I don't think this is the issue here... Did you check your network configurations for the new cards after you install them?

Sigh - yeah, checked and triple checked. Just running a simple TCP/IP network. I checked that the workgroup and ID was ok, and set the traditional 192.168.0.xx.

It could be an IRQ conflict. Check the Device manager and see what interrupts the Realtek NICs are using. If they have hard jumpers on the card, try moving those around.

Also, if you using these computers for a local network, try installing NetBEUI. It is much easier to configure than TCP/IP.

Thanks,
Sun

We've got quite a few old systems where I'm at and of those cards that do support 10/100, they have no problem connecting at 100baseTX.

Have you tried updating the bios? Are the cards busmastering? Do the computer support busmastering? I have seen alot of problems with other computers, and busmastering pci cards...

I also just had a problem tonight with several NICS in SS7 mobos running Win2k. Tried the Linksys lne100TX--they worked in a MSI KT7 motherboard with a Duron processor running Win2k Pro. They did NOT work in 2 SS7 motherboards--400MHz--running Win2k Pro/Server. One of the machines would not see the network (even though you could ping), the other one wouldn't even recognize the NIC.

The wierd thing is, I tried a 3COM 3C905-T4 NIC and it didn't work either. An intel Pro/100 did, however.
