Know where you can rent a car with stickshift?

I need to know how to drive a manual transmission car. I figured I'd get someone over 25 to rent a car with a stick for me. However, it seems that nobody in the U.S. rents cars with manual transmissions in them, for the sole reason being that idiots like me try to learn to drive a stick in them.

I'm in Tallahassee, FL. Anyone know where I can find one?

Uh, dosent the rental agreement specifies ALL drivers must be over 25 and not just the renter?

Also, most fleets carry autos for this reason. They probly dont want to have weekenders doing this or popping the clutch at 4 grand while burning out tires.

There is a place in orlando that rents stick corvettes. My father picked one up last time we were down there. They rented ferrari's as well. I am sure they are on the 'net somewhere.

I will see if I can find the reciept, but it has been a LONG while.

You don't have any friends with standards? I'm sure someone will let you practice a little in theirs.... if they know how to teach at all, you really shouldn't start off all that badly. It's easy! ;)

Renting a car with a stickshift is close to impossible because of the damage that would be done to rental fleets if they were widely available. If you're thinking about buying a car with a stick, have someone else teach you how to do it when you pick it up. In my case, my dad drove my car for the first two weeks and taught me to drive it in the evening until I got comfortable doing it. If this isn't practical for you, buy the car on Saturday morning and dedicate the weekend to learning with a friend. It's really, honestly, truthfully, NOT THAT HARD. ;)

What are you all talking about...lots of places here in NY where you can rent ferraris, lambos and vipers for the day....all are sticks. In fact some people even rent these cars for the prom, instead of a limo.

yeah but renting a vette/ferrari probably isn't too cost effective when you are trying to learn how to drive a stick and i'd hate to hurt a nice car like that learning to drive on it...

You could always pick up a local trade paper and look for a $200 "it still runs" standard car :).

AAA will give you a 30-minute on-the-road lesson with a stick shift car for about $50. That's all I needed.

Check out rental agencies that have exotic cars, corvettes, ferraris, etc. But be prepared to be raped. Daily charges are usually not too bad, but you typically only get very few free miles, any mileage beyond will be costly.

You guys are making this more complicated than it needs to be. I have twice rented cars with sticks (one was a V-6 Mustang, one was a Neon) from major American rental agencies, both within the last few years. The Mustang was an unrequested upgrade from a compact.

So, do you know what "large american agencies" those would be?

I should mention that I'm doing this just to learn to drive a stick. I'll also have someone in the car who knows how to do it.

I'd learn off of a friend's, but my only friends who drive a stick have a 2001 Passat and a 2001 TransAm. Needless to say, they don't want anyone touching their cars.

Honestly I can't recall - I was travelling on government orders and just went to whatever agency the military travel agency sent me to. I seem to recall it was Budget or Dollar.
