Long story short -

- Current job will be dead by May
- Want out of current job ASAP for multiple reasons
- Wife has applied to Residency programs in three different states (WI, MN, NE)
- Wife doesn't find out what state she'll land the residency in till the end of March
- I want to start applying and job hunting but can't since I don't know what state we'll wind up in

:(

I just have to sit around waiting till the end of next month to know where we're going. I'm hesitant to drop resumes because of the off chance I'll get a good job offer within a month and can't accept it because we don't know where we'll be at.

I know it could be worse - I could be out of a job and unemployed right now, so I'm thankful that I'm still getting paid. But this waiting game is nerve racking.

We have a pretty good idea of which state we'll be in, and there's several jobs that I want to apply for that are available right now, I just don't know if it's wise to apply this early.

And to top it off, I've got to put our house on the market when the same identical houses on both sides of us and directly across the street are for sale right now.

Why don't you apply for jobs in all those states? And it sucks that you can't sell y our house. That's what you get for living in tract housing.

I recommend taking a chance now and not waiting. Don't know what line of work you are interested in, but come spring there's gonna be a whole mess of recently graduated competition looking for employment.

Good luck, and by all means make sure you house looks purdier than your neighbors!

I'm just scared to apply because I don't think it's fair to an employer to offer me a job and have me say "Well, I want it, but I'll let you know in 3 weeks if I can take it".

I've applied to some jobs and haven't heard back about them for 3 months. I've applied to some other jobs and had calls on them in a matter of a couple hours.

That's one of my biggest concerns - I'm in IT. One of the places we are looking at (and probably the most likey) is Madison. Home of University of Wisconsin.

I would *REALLY* like to beat the graduation rush if I could.

Better practice up on your liberalism if you end up in Madison. :)

I don't see the value in applying for jobs when you don't know if you can accept them. You'd be potentially wasting a lot of people's time not to mention your own.

On a side note, when you put your house up for sale, include a sign that says "This house NOT affected by basement flooding or a cracked foundation!" Might not make the other sellers too happy, but hey, that's marketing! :)

Some of them may be willing to make allowances if you explain the circumstances. That all depends entirely on the company in question, though. I know we've made accommodations for some new hires, like one dude that had to be gone for 2-3 weeks within a short time of his start date, he just made it known during the interview process and everything was peachy.
If you'll be in Omaha, I know people at a few companies that I could check with and/or put a word in for you.

Did you not just head to AZ this past year?

Yup. But the company I moved down there was in the process of being bought out, so current employers moved me back up to Iowa. Deal never did end up going through, lots of things are screwed up from the deal. Lot's of bitterness all around. Morale at my office in IA is abysmal and I just want out before it all comes crumbling down.
