years back i read somewhere that allegedly he has the ability to speak flawless English (without accent) however whenever he is in the media he puts on his Asian accent. Any further truth to this? I mean, to me after reading this I've felt his 'accent' seems a bit off, and maybe more significantly, he sure does have a wide vocabulary range in contrast to his accent level.

I love the guy! He's funny.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he turns his accent on and off. I know plenty of people that can do that. In fact, I've done musicals with a professional dialect coach and it's amazing how simply an accent can be learned. I have a very convincing glaswegian Scottish accent as a result.
As for his vocab vs. his accent, as you get older it becomes much harder to pronounce certain sounds. You can learn the words, but the sounds that do not exist in your native language will always be hard to perfect.

Dunno, but here's here at Northwestern today.

I have no problem with his fake accent, I do prefer the guy who does East Meets West tho.

I've met him in person. He does have an accent (very slight) but he exaggerates it a bit on the TV show.

Really nice a friendly guy BTW.

REALLY, what was he doing?

Yes, E meets W, would that be Ken Hom or something.

Well anyway, the beef is that some have accused him of running a career of playing to the media, that he (Yan) should have the balls to speak English as well as he really can rather than play into what he feels is a more Asian image for his audience (Causian).

Yo,
I know people that claim to know his people.

You are correct.

He does it to appear more "authentic" to the American audience.

But really, does it matter? No. Love his show anyway.

Reminds me of Lee in John Steinbeck's "East of Eden".
