As usual Google is no help, every page full of auction aggregates and user manual merchants. I did not find one review or discussion about their quality.

I saw a good condition pair for sale locally. They are fairly big, two 12" woofers, midrange, tweeter, and some kind of strange slot port on the bottom. From looking at them, they don't scream high quality sound, but I would use them for gaming and Last.fm which don't require audiophile equipment. Anyone have experience with these?

Yeah, pretty much don't bother, unless they're like $10. These kinds of speakers from electronics companies (Sony, Technics, Pioneer, Yamaha, etc.) are usually pretty bad in comparison with those from speaker companies (Polk, JBL, Advent, etc.). They were usually pack-ins with the full-rack stereo systems from department stores, and not available for sale separately. They were usually designed more for their visual impact than for their sound. That being said, if you're moving up from a crappy pair of computer speakers, you will probably be happier with the big speakers than the computer speakers, assuming no major problems with the big speakers (always audition speakers before buying them, and listen to each of the drivers close-up to make sure it's functioning properly).

You know they will require an amp or receiver to power them, right?

I should have been more clear. I am looking to replace the fronts in my home theater. Currently I have a pair of Timewindows that have never really impressed me. For some types of music they are excellent, but games and movies sound awful. But it looks like the Technics can be judged on appearance afterall so thanks for the replies.

Receiver is an Onkyo RC-260. I've decided to go the DIY route and build some simple, efficient MTM towers with the help of Parts Express. I really enjoyed making my own sub enclosure when they were having big sales on subs and plate amps, so it will also be a fun project. And since 3/4" MDF is cheap I should be able to come out with something of quality well above what I could have bought.
