Seems like for a few thousand you can turn you car into an electric. With a 100 mile range though it doesn't seem practical other than for the daily commute. Hopefully by 2012 there's some regular electrics out, I could use one seeing as my commute now dropped my millage by 50mile/tank.

I always thought I'd like to convert a Fiero.
Mid mount engine, yank that out and the addition of heavy batteries there shouldn't affect weight distribution, plastic body panels makes it lighter
IMO still looks good and get a good ripping electric system in there and it might actually perrform the way it was intended for a fraction of the price of a Tesla

I've got a friend a work that converted an old corolla. He can drive on the highway normally and we took it out for a spin. He's got a commercial micro-controller that he used originally but now he's helping test a design for a home built micro-controller. The commercial one was nice and smooth but he's still tuning the home made one and it can be a little jerky at times. Pretty cool setup though, if you can weld at all you can pull it off. The hardest part was finding the spline shaft to hook up to the transmission.

I think it would be cool to have an electric car, but I drive more than 100 miles several times a week and I can't always predict how far I will have to drive when I leave the house. Sometimes what I thought was going to be a 60-mile day turns out to be 120+ miles. Maybe if they can get 110-volt charging decent enough on the Nissan Leaf and I could find a plug at the office, I could make it work.
